Inject some coastal charm into your home

The weather may have given us a gorgeously hot summer for a change, but if you’ve been busy working the likelihood is that you haven’t actually had a chance to visit the glorious seaside towns this country has to offer. As we’ve had some beautiful coastal-inspired fabrics made up for summer we thought we would give you some tips on how to inject a touch of coastal charm and summer into your own home…

Add a touch of French Riviera chic to your furniture for sophisticated summer evenings out on the decking with subtle neutral colours and delicately illustrated fabrics. We particularly love the Ocean Printed Cotton and Sailboat Printed Cotton here at Jim Lawrence that can be made up into different size cushions, and other soft furnishings.

Kitchen spring cleaning tips and ideas from Jim Lawrence

washing-bowl-300x199Take advantage of a bright spring day to get your home sparkling fresh and clean for the summer.

Let’s get the hard work out-of-the-way first! Nothing is going to make more impact in your kitchen than a really good scrub and clean. It’s amazing what a bucket of hot soapy water and a bit of elbow grease can achieve. It’s a really good time to overhaul often forgotten parts of your kitchen; lightly washing down your paint work and kitchen cupboard doors, for example, instantly freshen up your kitchen.

Over time polished brass knobs and handles in your kitchen can become tarnished with grease and finger prints.

Schoolhouse-Pull-Handle

Schoolhouse Drawer Pull

There are many dedicated brass cleaning products on the market, but a great natural way to restore their shine is to firstly wash them with warm soapy water, and then create your own gentle cleaning solution. Mix two tablespoons of salt and white wine vinegar with a pint of hot water and allow to cool slightly . Apply this mixture to your brass wear with a clean damp cloth. This should remove more stubborn stains and marks and reveal the sparking beauty of this stunning metal once more…

How to give a room a new look in an instant…

It is beginning to get colder and the darker evenings are setting in. It is the time of year when i look around my home and want to redecorate everything in sight. I never have the funds or the time to take on such a mammoth project so I found a way in which you can cheat and give your room a new look in a simple but effective way…just add a bold splash of colur!

It is a great way to brighten your room and bring out any subtle accents of colour that already exist in your design. You could accomplish this by painting one of the walls of your room, however I prefer to choose a few carefully selected items to give the same feel.

Changing the colour of the light in the room could be one of those items. The Barbican pendants are a great example of bright and bold lights that inject colour into a room.

Handmade Lampshades

My name is Emily and I’m currently doing two weeks of work experience at Jim Lawrence. I’ve been based in the marketing department with Cassie and Emily. I was really excited to have the opportunity to write a blog for the website on something that interests me, as I couldn’t believe all the  lampshades at Jim Lawrence are handmade in the workshop, meaning every one is individual and personal. When you hear the word handmade, it doesn’t mean as much as when you’re able to actually see the product being made, as I was able to.

How do you light a kitchen? This might seem like a How do you light a kitchen? This might seem like a big question…because it is! There are so many things to consider when choosing kitchen lighting, so we’ve boiled it all down to a few key pointers.

A great kitchen lighting scheme has the power to transform an ordinary kitchen into a truly spectacular one. Now that we’re living in increasingly open plan spaces with kitchens at the heart of your home, they have to perform on a multifunctional level with lighting that needs to cater for tasking, dining, relaxing, office or homework and entertaining.

How much light you would like in a room is entirely up to you and your personal preference so there is no standard rule to follow. However, if you need a starting point then our guide below will give you some tips, things to consider and our general rules of thumb. Swipe up in our story to see more on the Style Journal.
As far as we're concerned, a bedroom should embody As far as we're concerned, a bedroom should embody beauty whilst maintaing a soothing and calming atmosphere. With the right balance of lighting, accessories and personal touches, you can transform any bedroom into somthing luxurious as well as comfortable.

Whilst our Harleston Lamps add a soothing glow to snooze by, useful task lighting from carefully positioned Spotlights or Wall Lights offer stronger directional light when needed. Finding a balance with different layers of light is crucial when developing a relaxed space, so that you can alter the light outputs depending on your mood and the time of day.

Though colour coordinating soft furnishings looks great, subtle accessorising can also apply to your hardware. Matching sockets and switches to lighting creates a cohesive and considered look. Details do matter, and often it's the smaller things in a room that ensure the overall space looks its best. All Jim Lawrence products are made using traditional metal working techniques and are hand finished to the very highest standards here at our Suffolk workshop, so every part of your room will exude quality no matter how big or small.

How long should your pendant lights be? If How long should your pendant lights be?

If you are hanging your pendants from a central point in your room, you need to consider the height of your ceiling as a first step. Many old houses have low ceilings and may require flush or semi-flush lights so you are not constantly ducking or hitting your head. Always check the maximum height of the light that you can accommodate before choosing your lights and check our product information which gives the measurements of all our lights.

We recommend lights in sitting rooms, bedrooms and hallways should be hung at least 2m (7ft) above floor level to give adequate clearance, but it is your room so you can hang them at whatever height you feel comfortable with. We would recommend that a ceiling light over your dining table should be between 1/2 to 2/3 of the width of the table. Go bigger rather than smaller unless you are hanging two or three in a row.

All our pendant lights come with either 50cm, or 1m of cable and chain that can be shortened at home or lengthened on request.

Whether for a lofty barn roof, a dark hallway, your kitchen island or a bedroom you want to make a little cosier, there are many ways you can bring your room together with style and substance using pendants.
