Hand Forged Coffee, Console & Side Tables For Every Home Style

Discover our stylish hand forged coffee and console tables made in a range of unique finishes to suit every home.

At Jim Lawrence we have built a reputation for making beautiful lighting and home accessories using traditional techniques. From our earliest beginnings when the business was set up from the kitchen table of Jim and Sheena’s Suffolk farmhouse, we have remained steadfast in our aim to be an outstanding British manufacturer of lighting and home accessories. To this end, all Jim Lawrence products are designed, assembled and finished in-house.

Our Coffee and Console Tables are proud additions to our collection, helping you to elevate your entryways, hallways and living areas with high quality craftmanship in the form of functional, statement furniture pieces.

SMALLER SIDE TABLES

This is our elegant Hampton table in Matt Black. Perfectly suited to hallways and living areas, the Hampton is waiting to be dressed with your favourite flowers, a scented candle or perhaps one of our smaller table lamps to brighten up a corner of your home.

This handcrafted, solid steel side table is the Fairford Table, shown in our rich Old Gold finish. Elegant with sweeping concave legs and and a lattice trim, this side table is calling out for a placement in your home that might need a luxury lift. We particularly love using the Fairford for displaying leafy or trailing plants.

COFFEE TABLES

Console tables are taller and slimmer for slotting neatly into hallways and home entrances. The Windsor features simple ‘finial’ detailing for some added interest but looks best pared back with a few neatly displayed items where you can stash your keys and other pocket-sized essentials by the front foor. Choose from Matt Black (pictured) or Old Gold to suit your home style.

Introducing The New Cottage Glass Lighting Collection & More…

Inspired by the diversity of your own homes, we’ve curated an exquisite new collection of smaller wall, pendant and flush fitting ceiling lights in bright and airy glass. Always aiming to cater for everyone, with these designs we had smaller homes in mind, embracing contemporary cottage styling with space-saving at the fore.

Suited to daintier rooms where you still wish to utilise statement lighting for key areas like breakfast bars, hallways and those awkward but charming nooks throughout the home; this collection proves that functionality and beauty can go hand in hand.

THE HUDSON WALL & PENDANT LIGHTS

Bring the beautifully reflective quality of glass to your home with our fabulous new Hudson Wall and Pendant Lights – the latest addition to our growing family of hand-blown glass lighting.

A perfect marriage of modern and vintage style, the Hudsons are handsome as a pair or on their own, but always striking with their shallow glass shades.

THE SHOREDITCH PENDANT LIGHTS

With its traditional lamp holder and bell jar glass shade, our Shoreditch Pendant has a pared-back appearance that evokes the feel of loft-style living and will appeal to those wanting a clean, contemporary look to their home. Well suited to a small or narrow space and ideal for tasking, try hanging the Shoreditch in a row of three for maximum visual impact.

Please welcome….

THE HARBOUR OUTDOOR WALL LIGHT

A nautical outdoor wall light with a touch of industrial chic, the Harbour Outdoor Wall Light is the latest addition to our Outdoor Lighting Collection. The little brother to our award-winning Bulkhead, the Harbour incorporates many of the same design elements, wrapped up in a smaller package.

The Harbour is designed as a discreet exterior wall light for smaller spaces in a porch or garden. Roughly a third the size of its bigger brother – the Bulkhead – it will look wonderful fitted on its own, as a pair either side of a door or entrance, or in a row along a courtyard wall or fence.

FLUSH CEILING LIGHTS

Continuing our challenge to create versatile lighting that can be personalised by you, we have designed a new Flush Mount Ceiling Rose in our best-selling antiqued brass finish that you can purchase on its own, pair with a fabric pendant shade of your choice, or buy supplied with some of our most popular pendant shades….

Choose our elegant brass Club, Barbican and Large Balmoral Flush Fitting Lights to introduce a touch of warm metallic tones to your scheme, or select our beautifully reflective glass Fisher and Shotley shades for a bright and airy appearance. For a truly individual look, why not match your ceiling mount with one of our exquisite, fabric pendant shades that are all handmade at our Suffolk workshops.

Enhancing arhcitectural nooks and alcoves with cleverly positioned lighting is very effective in embracing the quirks of a smaller home whilst making the room feel lighter.

Whether you want to extend your existing family of Jim Lawrence lights by matching a flush mount to wall lights or pendants, or bring in some warm metal tones into the home for the first time, these lights are perfect for daintier homes with lower ceilings.

These designs allow you to enjoy the best of our quality craftmanship without compromising on space. If you have little room for a cable drop but want to highlight an island, for example, these flush lights can work in two’s or three’s to illuminate the area just as beautifully as their pendant equivalent.

5 Luxury Pendant Lights For Outdoors

Though it’s not Pimm’s season just yet, there’s a hint of summer in spring’s warmer breeze: a gentle reminder to start preparing the home for sunnier months and day’s spent outdoors. Our pendant lights for outdoors will transform the look of your garden, entrance or outbuildings, helping you to make the most of your summer (and carry you through to autumn and winter).

AVA PORCH PENDANT

We have taken our sought after Ava Pendant and redesigned it as an IP rated Outdoor Porch Light, perfect for adding a little character to a porch. The Ava Porch Pendant celebrates the reflective qualities of glass with a hand blown fluted shade that bounces light beautifully wherever it is placed. Forged from solid natural brass that has been lightly antiqued for a subtly aged look and has a wonderful, weighty quality that befits its handmade nature. With a rating of IP44 this outdoor light can withstand our temperamental British weather, and is supplied with 50cm of waterproof cable and a specially designed watertight ceiling rose.

CANTERBURY LANTERN

This magnificent light is our solid brass Standard Canterbury Lantern: a stunningly handsome outdoor pendant light that will instantly create an impact switched on or off thanks to its robust quality and grand proportions. In its making, we were inspired by the beauty of Georgian and Victorian carriage lanterns that we have reimagined in a more contemporary and practical style for today’s homes.

TILBURY LANTERN

Our solid brass Tilbury Lantern is a generously sized and weighty outdoor pendant light with a touch of industrial chic that will instantly draw your eye thanks to its imposing proportions. Designed to illuminate your front door, porch or gateway, it has a robust quality and timeless elegance that will suit modern as well as period properties. We were inspired by the Victorians lanterns that once graced the warehouses around Tilbury Docks. We have reimagined ours as a larger, more contemporary version with a beautiful spun brass ‘hood’ for today’s homes.

SALCOMBE PORCH PENDANT

Bring a dash of coastal character to your home entrance with our striking Salcombe Porch Pendant. The brass gallery is paired with a crisp glass casing to protect the bulb from the elements whilst providing a beautiful statement piece to your exterior design.

HACKNEY LANTERN

If you only have a front garden, this is certainly a good place to start. Your porch and front door is the first thing yourself and your guests will notice when arriving. A large statement lantern like our Hackney Chain Mounted Lantern is an classic design for defining the entry to your home. Traditionally styled on the carriage lanterns of the 19th century, it has a an elegant swan neck arm, gently tapering frame and hand blown glass sheets that gives it a beautifully robust and practical design that will lend your garden, porch or outbuildings a sense of timeless charm. Our wall mounted version of the Hackney Lantern is a handsome alternative.

Behind The Design | The Montgomery Pendant

We feel it only natural to embrace our British heritage when it comes to our products. We are known for our hand crafted and hand finished detailing, and we wanted to create a product where we could truly showcase the standard of our craftmanship. Our largest light to date, the grand proportions of our ten arm Montgomery create a dramatic focal point in open plan living spaces.

Perfect for high or vaulted ceilings in either a town or country home, our largest pendant enhances a period interior with its dramatic but delicately made qualities. With its beautiful Rococo style scrolled ironwork and delicate acanthus leaf design finished in old gold, its beauty is a testament to the skills of our Suffolk craftsmen.

Named after the town of Montgomery in Wales, this Baroque design was influenced by the nearby Powis Castle, a medieval castle, fortress and country house now cared for by the National Trust. Housing an extensive and magnificent collection of paintings, sculpture, furniture and tapestries, there is a wealth of inspiration for all interior lovers.

Powis is one of the few Baroque gardens to survive almost intact since the 1680s. Lavish and expansive, we wanted to reflect these qualities in our own design. Wandering the halls of the castle itself you will uncover many treasures, notably the 16th century Roman Table inlaid with lapis lazuli and other semi-precious stones: the Pietre dure table. Golden-hued acanthus leaf unfurls across the stone and the gilded legs demonstrate stunning workmanship.

The Baroque style followed the Renaissance period of art, embracing exuberant detail and grandeur to guarantee a sense of awe. Many of our British stately homes feature baroque art and architecture, inspiring us right through to the modern age and encouraging us to enjoy elements of opulence in the every day.

Our workshop Technical Lead Lee Saxby says the Montgomery is his favourite light to make. “ It’s a challenge”, he says, “but it’s far more interesting to work on than a light with a simpler design. I love welding the component parts together. The detail is beautiful and it feels great building all the parts so that it comes together.”

It takes around 14 hours to make the Montgomery from scratch. First, the ten shade arms and all the intricate scrolled metalwork is bent and hammered into shape in the forge by our blacksmith, Tom. Then it is collected together with all the separate leaf details and given to the welders to put together. Using their technical drawings as a guide, the welders use a series of numbered ‘jigs’ or braces to hold the leaves and scrollwork in place so they can be welded together. Working from the bottom up, they assemble the light arm by arm, piece by piece, building it into larger and larger sections until finally, the whole thing is complete. “The most difficult part is the middle section where the shape of the light suddenly becomes a lot smaller,” says Lee. “We spend a lot of time walking around it to make sure the shape is right and in proportion.”

“It takes around two days to prep and paint the Montgomery once it has been made, “says Carrie Drake, our Paint Shop Team Lead. “The most time consuming part is making sure it is completely covered in gold paint. It’s such an intricate light that it needs to be painted from lots of difficult angles to make sure it’s properly covered. Itis just too easy to miss out a tiny bit. “Our aim is to replicate the aged gold you find in stately homes. When it’s done it looks amazing. The embossed leaves pick up the gold beautifully. It really is a work of art.”

When finished in the workshop, the Montgomery is put into a blasting machine to clean it up for the paint line where it is powder coated in matt black. The paint team then build up the old gold finish in layers; first, hand spraying it with wet, old gold paint; then dusting it with a layer of wet matt black paint that is wiped back with paint thinner leaving just the black that settles into the grooves and crevices of the detail so that it enhances the relief. Finally, it is hand sprayed with another dusting and flecks of matt black to mimic the aged, slightly mottled look of old gold. This is a very ‘painterly’ process that involves building up layers of paint and hand touching the embossed details to make them stand out.

To find out more about our painting process read our inteview with our Painting Team.

…Then you’ll love these. For chandeliers on a smaller scale than the Montgomery but still creating an elegant statement, the Romana is an obvious choice. A beautifully handmade eight arm pendant light with an intricate design of gently curled fronds, this light is beautiful paired with our Classic Candle Shades.

For something daintier that still packs a punch, our Rococo Pendant might be for you. With a lightly antiqued finish, it is a beautiful pendant light for over the dining table or in any bedroom. Although not truly tiny, this is our smallest chandelier, so perfect for creating the wow factor in a modest space.

Create a stand-out space with our collection of luxury chandeliers – a sure way to invite an ornamental interest into your home. The chandelier has a long history, but it was during the 18th century where developments in glass manufacturing meant that lead glass was able to be made fairly cheaply, leading to the expansion in popularity of the crystal chandelier. Inspired by these historic designs, our most decorated droplet pendant is the Queensbury (shown above in Old Gold), delicately draped in droplets of glass to reflect and cast a magical glow around your home.

The Journey Of A Jim Lawrence Candle Shade

All of our lampshades are made in our Suffolk workshop by our talented team of shade makers from our range of beautiful fabrics that have all been handpicked as a perfect partner for our lighting range. A new lampshade will instantly refresh your room by breathing new life into your light fittings by helping to tie together your decor with colour, texture and ultimately character.

It has never been easier to click and order items straight to the door, and though a world of convenience has many merits, we still think it’s vital these products are made the best way they can be. Often, that means by hand and with great care. We invite you to join us on on a journey behind the scenes, embracing the hand made quality of our products, and to enjoy what goes on in our workshop once we have all closed the tab or put down the phone. For our first ever How It’s Made, we’ve chosen to share the journey of our popular Royal Osyter Silk Dupion Candle Shade.

handmade candle shades in royal oyster silk
Pure silk dupion is a uniquely beautiful fabric that has a luxurious textured quality and richness that cannot be reproduced in other materials. Not surprisingly, it is the most popular silk in the world thanks to its fabulous natural sheen and distinctive weave, making it much sought after in both period and contemporary homes for soft furnishings and bedding. The fabric is made using raw silk yarns that are turned into a fine thread which is tightly woven together to produce a crisp fabric with a highly lustrous surface and a prominent textured slub that is irregular in appearance. This disctinctive grain and gorgeous colourway is what makes the Royal Oyster a go-to for pairing with the warm patina of our Antiqued Brass metal finish.

Jim Lawrence fabrics in the Suffolk Warehouse

These petite lampshades are made to mimic an empire-style shape with tapering sides that are designed to fit the majority of our wall lights. They have a candle clip ‘butterfly’ wire fitting that you gently pull apart to sit the shade directly on top of a small bayonet (SBC, B15) or screw i (E14) bulb.

We offer two styles of candle shade – our standard Empire shaped Classic Candle shade that is 15cm wide at the bottom – and our French Drum style that has straighter sides and is a little narrower at 13cm wide. You can also choose from Cylinder, Tapered and even Metal Candle Shades. We have even created Bathroom Candle Shades for our IP rated 44 Bathroom Lighting. We’ve done our best to offer as much versatility as possible, so in turn you can get as creative as possible…

Jim Lawrence workshop behind the scenes
Before we even think about fabrics for all of these shapes and sizes, the wire for all our frames must be cut to length and welded together in the workshop. These frames are then put onto the paint line and painted a crisp white before being stored in the warehouse for our shade makers to ‘pick’ when your shade order comes through. As soon as you have selected which fabric and colourway you are choosing for your home – in this case our Royal Oyster dupion silk – the roll taken off the shelf and cut by hand making sure that the slub or pattern of the material is straight.

Jim Lawrence hand cut fabrics lengths
It is then carefully stuck to double sided adhesive laminate or card panels. The panels are run through a laminator which softens the glue to strengthen the bonding and flattens out any tiny air bubbles that might have been caught.

jim lawrence shade making how it's made
They are then put into our Zund, a digital flatbed cutting machine, that is pre-configured with all our shade measurements and is programmed to cut out the required shape of shade and quantity needed.

Jim Lawrence shade making how it's made

Our shade makers collect the panels for the shades they are going to make that day and at their workstations, pull off the adhesive along all the shade’s edges and stick double sided sticky tape along the exposed fabric.

Jim Lawrence hand made lamp shades
First the fabric along the seams is folded over the panel and glued carefully into place. The seam is then brought together and stuck down with superglue before being weighted down for a while for the glue to take.

Jim Lawrence candle shade how it's made
After 15-20 minutes, the weight is removed and the candle clip wire fitting is placed into the top of the shade along the top rim of the adhesive panel. Holding the fitting in one hand, our shade makers gently fold the stickly taped fabric edge over the wire frame, make sure there are no creases, and using whatever they like – their thumb, a blunt knife or file – they tuck the fabric in behind the wire making sure there are no frayed bits of fabric left loose.

Jim Lawrence lamp shade frames
When complete, glue is neatly rolled along the newly folded edge to keep it neat and ‘seal in’ the fabric. Once dry, the finished candle shade is ready to be placed safely in a sealed and labelled bag, ready to be passed on to our dispatch team.

The Royal Oyster Candle Shade is now ready to be packed, sent to you via our courier and paired with your lovely Jim Lawrence lighting.
