Enjoy Authentic Country Cosiness With A Warm Copper Kitchen

What does ‘country cosiness’ mean to you? For us it’s a glowing hearth, soft muted colours and a touch of well-loved rustic metal. Just like our individual tastes, it is only right that all homes are unique, but there are certainly some universal trends that stay in keeping with the well-loved country cottage style.

It’s easy to enjoy an authentic country interior by inviting metallic copper tones into your kitchen. A striking accent colour for lighting fixtures and fittings, copper lends a subtle blush warmth to your decor. Our Heritage Copper is a natural durable metal with a stunning patina that will turn up the modern country dial with little effort. Think vintage jelly molds and antique pots and pans…beautiful against classic white paint or alongside on-trend darker tones, it’s hard to imagine a true country kitchen without it.

Here are some simple ways to incorporate our hand finished copper lighting and accessories into your home this season that you can enjoy for a lifetime.

Solid Copper Pendant Lamp Shade

LIGHTING STYLES FOR YOUR COPPER KITCHEN: TIMELESS GLASS

The translucent qualities of glass can transform a room, creating a stunning focal point without losing any sense of space. Our hand blown glass shades in plain, fluted and coloured glass styles, are specially designed to hang above kitchen islands and breakfast bars where they will make the most of natural light to create a bright and airy sense of space and feeling of flow from one area of your kitchen to another. If you need tips on where to hang your kitchen pendants, the best place to go is our handy how-to guide.

Glass Pendant Lighting in Heritage Copper

The fluted hand blown glass of the Fulbourn is a striking choice, creating the illusion of softness whilst still illuminating your space with its warm white light.

Jim Lawrence Walcot Pendant
A go-to for kitchens and dining rooms, the Walcot would look wonderful teamed up with a display of authentic copper pots and pans in a traditional country home.

THE FARMHOUSE LOOK

Copper Kitchen Lighting

Turn up your country style with gently rustic solid metal shades. Enhance warm tones and texture with period-inspired detailing to bring an authentic farmhouse look into your home. A classic pendant ceiling light with a nod to retro styling, the Exeter is designed for a country kitchen, where it looks fabulous on its own or in a pair.

The dainty Barbican Pendant light is one of our most popular and versatile pendants lights. With its elegant silhouette and smaller proportions it works wonderfully in pairs or a trio above a dining table, breakfast bar or island unit.

MATCHING YOUR LIGHTING ACCESSORIES

Swapping your old kitchen drawer handles and knobs for new ones is a great way to refresh your kitchen without resorting to a refit, while using handcrafted ones gives your room a personal touch and lovely ‘lived in’ feel. Our Napier Cupboard Knobs have quickly become a firm Jim Lawrence favourite because they serve just that purpose: creating instant style wherever they are used.

PAIR WITH NEUTRAL LINENS FOR A NATURAL LOOK

Copper fittings look fabulous when matched together, creating a chic uniform look with their soft, buffed patina. Combine neutral linen with this unique colouring for a natural touch with a homely feel. There’s no questioning that this dreamy fabric is a interior staple…

We love the grain of linen when lit up as a lampshade, highlighting the sought after textured weave whether in its natural oatmeal hues or dyed a soft colour to match your decor. View our full soft linen available to buy as a cut length to get creative with, a ready made cushion cover or one of our luxury lampshades.

Alternatively, if you want to maximise the feeling of comfort, our heritage wools and tweeds allow for a perfect modern country marriage when paired with the rustic nature of our heritage copper metalwork. A hardy close weave, the fabric is as tough as it is attractive – both rugged and refined – a perfect amalgamation for country style.

MADE BY US

Our Heritage Copper products are created by our team of craftsmen who hand finish each solid copper piece with an antiquing solution to accelerate the natural process of tarnishing. This process produces our beautifully soft, heritage finish suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. A free metal swatch is available on request if you need a little help to decide.

As our Heritage Copper products use natural, un-lacquered copper, it will continue to age and develop a darker dull patina over time in your home. This is particularly hastened in damp or harsh outdoor environments. To decelerate this aging process we recommend applying a good quality metal cleaning solution to the tarnished areas. Simply work the cleaning solution in by rubbing briskly with a soft cloth and then buff the copper to restore its original lustre. Please note that chemical polishes can strip away the original antiquing solution too so take care to use cleaning products sparingly to retain the aged heritage look of the product.

We are very proud of the quality of our workmanship and designs that we feel highlight the skill of our metal workers and their ability to make products that suit both contemporary and period properties. To learn more about how to take care of all of our unique finishes, click here.

A home needs balanced lighting, so why not choose a solid spun shade to compliment a pendant within your home? If hand blown glass isn’t right for you, a full copper shade is perfect for a room than needs a focal point. We love this customer image from @catwalktocowpat featuring the Leiston Pendant Light in Heritage Copper.

Vintage copper detailing goes wonderfully with our Heritage Copper finish, but you don’t have to go far to find another match. Our Antiqued Brass finish works beautifully alongside the blush hues of copper, as you can see in this gorgeous cottage kitchen from @thelittlestonecottage. Both will further tarnish as time passes, creating our unique and sought after antiqued patina.

Introducing our NEW Hunstanton Velvet in Saffron

Our Hunstanton Velvets have a rich and sumptuous quality that will bring a touch of luxury to your home. Our first release of this collection was influenced by the sea and skyscapes of north Norfolk, each tone evoking the dramatic sunsets and vast stretched out sands of Hunstanton and the surrounding coastline. We felt we needed a bold, lustrous Saffron Velvet to spice up the collection just in time for the winter season, offsetting the cool colours in the range and brightening your interior during these darker days.

Renowned for our skyscapes thanks to the relatively flat terrain, we wanted this colour to mirror the burst of sunshine on still winter mornings and the climactic sunsets that Suffolk and Norfolk are celebrated for. Our Saffron Velvet is a highly pigmented cadmium yellow, inspired by the origins of velvet weaving in the far East, created as early as the thirteenth century.

Velvet is traditionally woven on a special loom that weaves two thicknesses of the material at the same time. Originally made of silk thread; the structure of velvet is created by warps that are drawn up over rods or wires to make the loops. As the weaving progresses, the rods are removed. The resulting loops may be cut to form dense pile, or left uncut. This gives velvet its weighty and compact yet very soft nap: the rough/smooth feeling you get when you run your palm across it.

Associated with wealth and luxury since its creation, it’s hard to separate this distinctive cloth from its regal and reverent beginnings. Fortunately we are all now able to enjoy the deluxe nature of velvet in the everyday, drawing inspiration from it’s opulent past and weaving this story into the contemporary. Still just as romantic, kingly and divine to the touch, a hint of velvet at home goes a long way. It revives a rooms with colour and its signature glimmering presence: a subtle magic that will continue to capture our interest for many ages to come.

Characterised by its rich depth of colour and nap, our Hunstanton collection is coveted for headboards, drapes, cushions and upholstery. Enjoy our collection of Cushions, Lamp Shades and Cut Lengths.

Behind the Name

Behind The Name | The Walcot Pendant

We feel it only natural to embrace our British heritage when it comes to our products. We knew we had to create a light that celebrated the design-led location of our second showroom, which is where the idea for our elegant Walcot Pendant was born.

The Georgian detailing that Bath is known for is characterised by a focus on graceful structures, fine lines, and elegant proportions, but sometimes you need a simple accompaniment for more elaborate interiors. The Walcot is made with a hand-blown dome shaped glass shade, a little nod to the bell jars that were originally hung in vestibules and entrance halls of Georgian homes.

More pared back and contemporary than old fashioned lanterns, however, this domed pendant is effortlessly stylish when suspended on our braided cable. Clear glass shades bypass the visual imposition that can sometimes happen with weightier lighting and higher ceilings, allowing light to pass through whichever room you choose to place it. This is ideal for Georgian interiors which take pride in architectural symmetry: something the Walcot complements beautifully instead of interrupts. Whether paired with classic brass (widely used on many types of Georgian furniture) or married with our range of other hand-crafted finishes to suit your interior, the Walcot is a wonderful choice fitted in a trio or hung solitarily.

For the larger siblings of the Walcot, view our Chalford and Lansdown pendants. Named after neighbouring locations that are equally beautiful but offer different charms…the same can be said for the lights themselves.

OUR WALCOT STREET SHOWROOM

When we were looking for a location to open our first showroom outside of Suffolk we were always drawn to Bath. Isn’t it such natural fit with our products? You can find us on beautiful Walcot Street, a backdrop perfect for showcasing how to marry the style of our hand crafted designs and the classic honeyed hues of Bath stone.

The shop itself, number 114-116 Walcot Street, is a grade II listed building built in the 1700’s. Famous for its curved frontage, this was designed to allow horse drawn carriages to turn around in the street. Bath has long been a fashionable destination for city folk seeking a more relaxed pace of life, and it has built up a reputation as the second home of interior design outside London. Packed with period charm, the Georgian buildings on our street sweep and stand tall with their limestone fronts, the grey flagstone pavements gently warped with footsteps of curious shoppers over the years. There’s plenty to see and do nearby, so be sure to step out of the November chill and see what we have inside before enjoying what the rest of the city has to offer.

You can view our extensive collection of lighting, homeware and fabrics here, including our brand new wall lighting range and cow parsley fabric. Our lovely team will be on hand to help you with all enquiries and orders. The showroom is open from 09.30am to 5.30pm weekly but please note we are closed on Sundays. We do not hold any stock in Bath and all orders will be dispatched from our workshop in Suffolk.

Meet The Team

Meet The Jim Lawrence Packing & Dispatch Team

As much as we love seeing our products styled and in use, we really enjoy seeing customer photos of our packages arriving and products being unwrapped. We all know the feeling of tearing open a parcel or package in anticipation for the goods within (particularly as we near the festive season!), and we truly get as much of a thrill as you do seeing Jim Lawrence lights and accessories in your home.

The events of the past couple of years have given us all more confidence when it comes to shopping online – and though a world of convenience has many merits – we still think it’s vital these products are made the best way they can be. Often, that means by hand and with great care. This means they must be packaged with care too.

As we approach Christmas, what could be more fitting than a tour through our packing and dispatch department? Between the time you click ‘order’ and the sound of your doorbell announcing their arrival, we have a cohort of staff ensuring everything goes smoothly behind the scenes. We caught up with Jane Stace, our Packing and Dispatch Team Lead, to share the goings on during the busiest time of the year in our very own Santa’s workshop…

Welcome to the Style Journal Jane. Who makes up the team in our busy packing department?

First off there is Karen our manager – she’s head of Customer Fulfilment – then there is the packing and dispatch team, me, Kiera, Talia, Nicola, Sharon, Adrian and Richard. It is our job it is to get our customers’ orders ready to send to them.

What do you do in packing and dispatch?

There are two sides to the job. The first is the ‘putting’, where we put all the products that have been made in the workshop and packed into boxes into storage in the warehouse so they can be found later to fulfil a customer’s order.

The second part is ‘picking’ or fulfilling those customers’ orders. When a customer places an order, it is our job to collect all the products in the order from the warehouse and get them ready to be packed into boxes and dispatched for our couriers to deliver.

What does a typical working day look like?

I start at 8am and most of the team are here by 9 and we finish at around 5.30pm. First thing Karen and I will go through the orders and sort out the internationals and get the ‘picks’ (the list of products that are in stock and ready to pack) ready for the team to start collecting.

I then meet with the rest of the team to sort the other jobs that need doing that day. We need someone doing the fabric swatch orders, someone to assemble the curtain pole packs, and someone to send out the brochure requests. We also calculate the cost of international shipping for our customers abroad, sort out orders and contact customers who want to collect their orders from the showroom, and sort out the ‘waiting to go shelf’ for orders that need to be held back for a specific delivery date.

We decide who will be on picking – getting products together for an order – and who’s packing – wrapping products up and packing them into our boxes – so the rest of the day is spent doing that.

After lunch, one of us will go onto dispatch, that is our machine that logs consignment numbers and prints out delivery labels that are stuck onto each box and scanned by the courier when the vans arrive from 2pm onwards.

How many orders/deliveries do you deal with in a day?

We try to dispatch as many orders as we can on the same day the order is made, or the next day at the least, so that our customers get them as quickly as possible. On average, we send out between 200-300 orders a day – that’s 4 fully loaded vans that the courier drives away!

We have many sturdy products, but some truly fragile ones too! How do you handle such a variety of items?

Most products are packed into boxes when they come off the assembly line, so we never see them. All we need to do with our lights for example, is pop a bulb into the box. Of the smaller items we pack, the heavier ironmongery like window stays or curtain pole accessories are the best as they are hardwearing so you don’t worry about them being damaged in transit.

The trickiest things to pack are shades because they are so fragile. They dent very easily in transit, so you have to take a lot of care to get the packing right – just enough room to allow for a little movement – but not so much that they bang around inside the box.

We are all very aware of the need to be as ecological as possible when it comes to reducing waste and using sustainable products, how has this affected packing?

As a company we are constantly reviewing the way we work and the materials we use to see if there is a ‘greener’ way of doing it.  In our department, we always reuse any packaging that it sent back to us via our Returns Department, or from our suppliers. And now, even better, we’ve completely done away with plastic, so all our packaging is made from recycled paper and is reusable.

We have a Tiger Roll machine that produces beehive-style packing paper that wraps tightly around an object, so we use it around all our glass. We no longer use plastic air pillows or bubble wrap to cushion products, instead we use Geami Wrap, a machine that ‘scrunches’ up brown paper to fill out the space in boxes, and we’ve swapped plastic bags for vintage-style paper envelopes to send out small items like curtain rings, screws or fasteners.

What is the best part of working with Jim Lawrence?

I love everything about my job. We’ve got a great team, they’re hard working and fun. We have a laugh. They’re all quite young, so are full of energy, although I do feel like their mum from time to time! I enjoy being on my feet, moving around all day, it keeps me fit and the day goes so fast.

It’s quite a skill to be able to judge the right size box needed for packing up an order, especially when it comes to international orders because you have to calculate the cost of shipping depending on the quantity, size and weight of the boxes. You get a real sense of satisfaction when they’re done, seeing them loaded into the van and travelling to their new homes.

Behind The Design | The Montgomery Pendant

We feel it only natural to embrace our British heritage when it comes to our products. We are known for our hand crafted and hand finished detailing, and we wanted to create a product where we could truly showcase the standard of our craftmanship. Our largest light to date, the grand proportions of our ten arm Montgomery create a dramatic focal point in open plan living spaces.

Perfect for high or vaulted ceilings in either a town or country home, our largest pendant enhances a period interior with its dramatic but delicately made qualities. With its beautiful Rococo style scrolled ironwork and delicate acanthus leaf design finished in old gold, its beauty is a testament to the skills of our Suffolk craftsmen.

Named after the town of Montgomery in Wales, this Baroque design was influenced by the nearby Powis Castle, a medieval castle, fortress and country house now cared for by the National Trust. Housing an extensive and magnificent collection of paintings, sculpture, furniture and tapestries, there is a wealth of inspiration for all interior lovers.

Powis is one of the few Baroque gardens to survive almost intact since the 1680s. Lavish and expansive, we wanted to reflect these qualities in our own design. Wandering the halls of the castle itself you will uncover many treasures, notably the 16th century Roman Table inlaid with lapis lazuli and other semi-precious stones: the Pietre dure table. Golden-hued acanthus leaf unfurls across the stone and the gilded legs demonstrate stunning workmanship.

The Baroque style followed the Renaissance period of art, embracing exuberant detail and grandeur to guarantee a sense of awe. Many of our British stately homes feature baroque art and architecture, inspiring us right through to the modern age and encouraging us to enjoy elements of opulence in the every day.

Our workshop Technical Lead Lee Saxby says the Montgomery is his favourite light to make. “ It’s a challenge”, he says, “but it’s far more interesting to work on than a light with a simpler design. I love welding the component parts together. The detail is beautiful and it feels great building all the parts so that it comes together.”

It takes around 14 hours to make the Montgomery from scratch. First, the ten shade arms and all the intricate scrolled metalwork is bent and hammered into shape in the forge by our blacksmith, Tom. Then it is collected together with all the separate leaf details and given to the welders to put together. Using their technical drawings as a guide, the welders use a series of numbered ‘jigs’ or braces to hold the leaves and scrollwork in place so they can be welded together. Working from the bottom up, they assemble the light arm by arm, piece by piece, building it into larger and larger sections until finally, the whole thing is complete. “The most difficult part is the middle section where the shape of the light suddenly becomes a lot smaller,” says Lee. “We spend a lot of time walking around it to make sure the shape is right and in proportion.”

“It takes around two days to prep and paint the Montgomery once it has been made, “says Carrie Drake, our Paint Shop Team Lead. “The most time consuming part is making sure it is completely covered in gold paint. It’s such an intricate light that it needs to be painted from lots of difficult angles to make sure it’s properly covered. Itis just too easy to miss out a tiny bit. “Our aim is to replicate the aged gold you find in stately homes. When it’s done it looks amazing. The embossed leaves pick up the gold beautifully. It really is a work of art.”

When finished in the workshop, the Montgomery is put into a blasting machine to clean it up for the paint line where it is powder coated in matt black. The paint team then build up the old gold finish in layers; first, hand spraying it with wet, old gold paint; then dusting it with a layer of wet matt black paint that is wiped back with paint thinner leaving just the black that settles into the grooves and crevices of the detail so that it enhances the relief. Finally, it is hand sprayed with another dusting and flecks of matt black to mimic the aged, slightly mottled look of old gold. This is a very ‘painterly’ process that involves building up layers of paint and hand touching the embossed details to make them stand out.

To find out more about our painting process read our inteview with our Painting Team.

…Then you’ll love these. For chandeliers on a smaller scale than the Montgomery but still creating an elegant statement, the Romana is an obvious choice. A beautifully handmade eight arm pendant light with an intricate design of gently curled fronds, this light is beautiful paired with our Classic Candle Shades.

For something daintier that still packs a punch, our Rococo Pendant might be for you. With a lightly antiqued finish, it is a beautiful pendant light for over the dining table or in any bedroom. Although not truly tiny, this is our smallest chandelier, so perfect for creating the wow factor in a modest space.

Create a stand-out space with our collection of luxury chandeliers – a sure way to invite an ornamental interest into your home. The chandelier has a long history, but it was during the 18th century where developments in glass manufacturing meant that lead glass was able to be made fairly cheaply, leading to the expansion in popularity of the crystal chandelier. Inspired by these historic designs, our most decorated droplet pendant is the Queensbury (shown above in Old Gold), delicately draped in droplets of glass to reflect and cast a magical glow around your home.

If You Like Our Club Wall Light, Then You’ll Love These…

It’s no wonder that the Club Wall Light is one of our most popular designs. With its simply striking look and vintage inspired elegance, it’s a staple for many interior styles. Our take on the traditional lighting found in gentleman’s clubs, this classic design produces lovely subdued pools of light that are ideal for tasking. The Club is made for creating cosy corners out of alcoves, archways and other architectural nooks, but is also extraordinarily apt at creating pockets of light in larger rooms for boosting the ambience where needed.

We have many items that you can recognise quickly as a Jim Lawrence design, but with over 8,000 products there’s plenty that you might not know you needed. We’ve collated some perfect partners to the Club Wall Light, or some daintier alternatives if you adore the look but are short on space. Our highly skilled metal workers have created a whole family of products with timeless quality, all available to be used in your gorgeous interiors. If you like the Club Wall Light, then you’ll love these…

With its dainty proportions and simple lines, the Holt Wall Light is ideally suited to a smaller space. Very similar to the Club, it is cast in solid natural brass with a spun shade but features a pretty hexagonal detail on the backplate. Whether fitted solitarily or in a row of three or more along a hallway or landing, the Holt has a gentle art deco appeal that is perfect for task or accent lighting.

A curvier option than our popular Club and wearing the beautiful spun shade of our Barbican Pendant, our  Barbican Wall Light is a softer take on industrial lighting. Choose from Antiqued Brass, Clay or Slate Grey to enjoy the rusticity of warehouse style with our signature luxury look.

A traditionally styled, hand crafted, single spotlight, our Curtis Spot Light combines the practicality of a spotlight with the beauty of our Club Wall Light, with which it shares a similarly shaped shade. The Curtis is ideally suited as a down lighter for your kitchen, bedroom or living room. Its pretty spun shade, raised edge and visible braided cable, gives it a retro feel that would suit a contemporary home as much as it would a period one.

The Curtis is scaled to work in a small space as well as a large one and features a head that can be angled through 90 degrees and rotated through 350 degrees so you can focus your light wherever you want it.

If you like the backplate of the Holt but are attracted to the delicate nature of hand blown glass, the Fisher Wall Light is for you. The light from the Fisher is softly diffused through the fluted shade, helping to create a gentle atmosphere for the home.

The Salthouse Wall Light is the first light we have designed that puts its bulb centre stage. A Jim Lawrence take on industrial lighting styles from the 50s and 60s, we recommend pairing this retro inspired light with an oversized bulb for maximum effect.

What the dainty Salthouse lacks in size it makes up for in character. With its simple lines, spun metal shade and tilting head that can move through 90 degrees, this light packs a stylish punch despite its dainty proportions. Choose from Antiqued Brass, Matt Black, Clay or Slate Grey to best complement your interior. Do pay close attention to the measurements of this little light.

The Coastal look is an interior style close to our hearts with the stretched out sands of the Suffolk and Norfolk coasts a stones throw away from our head office. We love the laid back feel and how we can include elements from the landscape into the decor. A sizeable wall light with a unique shade, the Scallop is carefully designed to combine a decorative shade with a subdued backlight, perfect for creating mood lighting whilst making a statement. Also available in Nickel and Old Ivory.

For those of you who love the look of a brass shade and already have one of our wall lights that takes a candle bulb, our Solid Brass Candle Shade is a wonderful choice for turning up the luxury in a room.

If you would like to know how best to maintain your Jim Lawrence products, then we have created a selection of guides for you to follow which will help you clean and look after your hand finished items making them look just as good as new for years to come. 5 Table Lamp Styles For A Cosy Autumnal Interior

We’re looking forward to embracing autumn and the cosy late afternoons and evenings that are to unfold with the season. Think golden sunsets, russet tones in the leaves, the lingering of bonfire smoke on knitwear and scented candlelight. Autumn can prove mulchy, frosty and sometimes damp, but when your home is prepared you’ll be ready to hunker down and enjoy the season at its finest.

Layering your lighting with table lamps is essential for that sought after seasonal feel of nesting, so we’ve compiled a collection of our best selling table lamps. A requisite for comfort and calm, creating pools of light from different sources is the key to a balanced interior. Fortunately with us there’s ample choice and an extensive catalogue of fabrics to bring a little texture and colour to your room...

One of our most popular table lamps, the Abercrombie has a heritage look that will hit the spot for those after a vintage look in the home. Incorporating a spun brass shade and base with a contemporary steel stem, and our beautiful, braided cable, the Abercrombie will sit as comfortably in a modern setting as it would a period one.

A simple, understated desk lamp that will bring a classical touch to your study or bedroom, our Studio Desk Lamp combines practicality with its classic good looks. Handcrafted from solid, natural brass with a spun brass shade, the Studio moves on an elbow joint so you can angle light where you most need it.

Our handsome brass Hendon Table Lamp is traditionally designed and stylishly simple so you have scope to get a little more creative with your shade choice. Featuring roundel detailing on its column and a spun brass base, it has a clean silhouette that will brighten up any sideboard, bedside table or console and fits seamlessly into a living room or study. Pictured with our Featherdown fabric in Stone on a 20cm Medium French Drum Shade.

You’d be hard pressed not to be able to merge this simply elegant lamp base into any interior scheme, but we feel it’s the best option for a modern home that might need a subtle period accent. The simplicity of the Porter Table Lamp’s design means it will suit any shade shape that is around 30cm in size. We think it looks particularly good with a Medium French Drum Shade as pictured above. Available in Beeswax, Clay, Matt Black and Polished as well as a smaller base size.

If you are looking for a beautifully reflective glass lamp for your lounge, hallway or bedroom, our fluted Harleston should fit the bill. Handblown here in Suffolk, it sports an eye-catching, fluted glass ball base that surrounds the central stem, ensuring it becomes a focal point in any room in your home. Choose from Fluted or Plain handblown glass accompanied by Antiqued Brass, Polished, Beeswax or Nickel hardware.

So how do you size up a shade for a table lamp? Before the ‘rules’ it’s important to bear in mind there is no such thing as the wrong shade. If you love it – it’s the right shade. Experimenting with lamp shades in new fabrics, shapes and colours is great way to instantly update your home’s style. Table lamps come in all shapes and sizes so it is important to keep the shade proportional to the size and shape of the base . You don’t want your look dwarfed by a huge shade or unbalanced by a small one. A perfectly fitting shade should hide the bulb holder underneath without encroaching on the lamp base itself.

Lamp shades are sized by measuring cross the diameter at the bottom of the shade – so if the shade diameter measures 25cm across the bottom, then it is known as a 25cm shade. As a rule, you should be looking for 15-20 cm wide shades for a smaller lamp base, between 20-35 cm for an average lamp base and anything up to about 50 cm for a larger lamp base.

A rough guide to working out the size of shade you require is to measure the height of your table lamp from the bottom of the base to the top of the lamp stem just below the lamp holder. The shade you select should then have a diameter of plus or minus 5cm of this measured height. So, if you have lamp that is 40cm tall, you should choose a shade that is 35 to 45cm wide. Visit our Knowledge Base for further technical information.

As a rule of thumb, we say the shape of the shade should reflect the shape of your lamp base. If the base is straight, square or rectangular, a similar shaped shade that mirrors its lines will look better than a round one. If your lamp base is round or tapered, a sloping or straight round shade such as an Empire, French Drum or Oval shade will suit it.

All of our lampshades are made in our Suffolk workshop by our talented team of shade makers from our range of beautiful fabrics that have all been handpicked as a perfect partner for our lighting range. A new lampshade will instantly refresh your room by breathing new life into your light fittings by helping to tie together your decor with colour, texture and ultimately character. We’ve curated a wonderful collection of cotton, wool, linens, silks and velvets for you to choose from.

It has never been easier to click and order items straight to the door, and though a world of convenience has many merits, we still think it’s vital these products are made the best way they can be. Often, that means by hand and with great care. We invite you to join us on on a journey behind the scenes to embracing the hand made quality of our lampshades. Our New Cow Parsley Fabric Collection, Inspired By Home

In celebration of our rural roots, we are thrilled to introduce our new Cow Parsley Collection in three pretty colourways. This fabric features an almond coloured Cow Parsley motif on a cotton mix of Duck Egg Blue, Soft Gold and Soft Grey.

We feel it only natural to embrace our British heritage when it comes to our products. We live in a place of such historical richness where inspiration is all around, constantly influencing our design choices whether through architecture, colour or age-old manufacturing techniques.

We have all spent a great deal of time reassessing what it means to be home, and one thing that has united many of us is the appreciation for the beautiful landscapes that we have on our doorstep in Britain. What better way to pay tribute to the beautiful countryside of England than creating a product that celebrates our natural surroundings every month of the year?

Still based on the farm where the business began over 20 years ago, Jim and Sheena are well versed in the landscape of rural Suffolk. In Spring, the familiar sight of Cow Parsley is laced through the hedgerows, dancing its way down the bumpy country lane customers once travelled down to find us.

Synonymous with country living, this delicate wild plant was a first choice for our fabric pattern. When it came to choosing the colour palette, it was clear that plucking their favourite views rom the farm across all mesmerising seasons would be translated into this new collection.

We opted for Grey, Blue and Gold to summarise the best parts of country life from January-December. Soft Grey to emulate the fresh dew of early spring mornings, autumnal woodsmoke and the crisp frost of winter. Soft Gold inspired by the glowing warmth of late September light, fire embers in December and the flourishing tones of daffodils come March. Suffolk is renowned for its skyscapes thanks to its relatively flat terrain, so a sprightly Duck Egg hue honours the large expanse of blue that creates a striking backdrop no matter the weather.

There is nothing quite like returning home from a walk in the countryside and pulling your arms from your coat sleeves to a hint of lingering woodsmoke or cut grass before putting the kettle on. This collection conjures memories just like these: kicking off muddy boots at the doorstep and warming your hands on the radiator, admiring the first blooms of spring and the hum of wildlife in the trees. Our Cow Parsley collection neatly encapsulates all of these small seasonal joys into something you can admire all year round as part of your interior.

Swapping out your soft furnishings like cushions is a great way to update a room without having to redesign fully. Blending or contrasting these natural neutrals creates a beautiful country colour palette.

Choose from our Classic Candle Shades, French Drum Candle Shades and 20cm French Drum style to suit your home style. Cotton is one of the most commonly used fabrics for lamp shades as it is lightweight, durable and has a softness that is ideal for diffusing light evenly around a room.

Order any length you need to incorporate these colourways into your interior design. Alternatively, our expert team of seamstresses create beautiful made-to-measure curtains & blinds from our collection. Call us for a quotation.

Our Cow Parsley has a loose, rustic weave that gives it a wonderful texture akin to linen. It is uniform appearance and brings a fresh, understated elegance for a laid-back kitchen, living room or bedroom whether enjoyed as a shade or cut fabric like curtains and blinds.

Match our soft natural neutrals with seasonal wool and tweed, or choose the rich nap of sumptous velvets in teal and pink for a beautiful modern country look.

The story of Jim Lawrence began in 1994 at his Suffolk farm. Jim was busy rearing pigs and cows but it was clear that stock farming on such a small scale was not going to be profitable and Jim needed to find something else to do. He decided to set up a forge in one of the farm buildings and experimented by making specialist pieces for friends and neighbours.

From this modest beginning, Jim began producing a small range of candlesticks and chandeliers and selling them at fairs and markets. He then moved on to gates, railings and curtain poles and from the reaction of his customers’ he realised there was a demand for stylish, designer quality fixtures and fittings for the home, made with natural materials.

By 2000 Jim Lawrence had expanded to such a degree that Jim knew he had to move. The business had outgrown the farm buildings it was housed in and customers, staff and delivery men struggled daily down a bumpy farm track to find it. Since most of the staff came from the nearby market town of Hadleigh, in 2008 Jim moved the company there, taking over an empty bottling factory on the outskirts of town that came with lots of room for workshops, offices and a warehouse.

Over the past 20 years Jim Lawrence has worked very hard to build up a reputation for making classic, high quality products using traditional, handcrafted techniques. Today we employ a skilled team of 150 engineers, welders, painters, seamstresses, designers, lampshade makers and technicians, alongside a full cohort of support staff. The workshops sit alongside a large and airy showroom where customers can view our full range of products, all clearly displayed to make choosing your perfect lighting and home accessories as straightforward as possible. We also now have a showroom in the beautiful area of Walcot in Bath.

By focusing on quality of materials, craftsmanship, outstanding customer service and the well-being of the Jim Lawrence community, our mission is to create stylish, designer quality fixtures and fittings for the home made with natural materials. It is our belief that by selling directly to our customers, we can guarantee that every product we sell meets the exacting quality control standards we have set and for which we are renowned. We have come a long way since our farm days and you may no longer have to bump down a track to find us. But our ethos remains the same: to provide individually handmade products and the highest possible levels of customer service. Read the whole story here, and view our full collection of products.

Meet The Team

Meet The Jim Lawrence Painting Team

All Jim Lawrence metalware starts off in the workshop where it is forged, welded and cleaned ready for finishing. We stock our products in the finishes that we feel suit them best. From traditional antiqued metal effects, to bold contemporary paint colours, our products are available in a fantastic variety of hand crafted finishes to perfectly suit your home’s style.

Our painted options include colours like our Old Gold, Clay, Slate Grey and Matt Black to name a few. These unique-to-us colours are created by painting the items in a powder coating process that creates a smooth, hard-wearing surface which is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. We use hand-held paint guns to spray every product with powder paint that bonds to the surface electromagnetically. It takes a lot of skill and practice to make sure the colour is sprayed evenly over the surface to produce a uniform tone and colour, and we thought you might like to see a glimpse of the talented team behind the products you take home.

Responsible for running our painting department is team lead Carrie Drake. We caught up with her in the workshop to ask a few questions…

First of all, who makes up the team?

We have a small group of skilled craftsmen who are able to work across different sections of the Jim Lawrence foundry depending on where they are needed most. There’s Gary, Karl, Marcel, Wally and Tim.

What does a typical day look like?

Most of us start early at 7 or 7.30am so we can get prepped for the day. We sort out the paint shop tasks ready for our daily meeting at 9am when we decide on the products been painted that day and chase up any products that have been held up in the workshop.

The paint line is generally in full operation between 10am to 12noon with us doing the majority of spray painting then. The afternoon is then spent quality checking the days’ paint jobs, doing any wet spray painting, cleaning down the equipment and prepping for the next day. Most of the team head home by 3.30pm but I stay later to experiment with new colours and finishes that we may be considering for new products.

You get to work with paint all day, do you have an artistic background?

Art was always my favourite lesson at school and I did a degree in model making and effects, so yes I love working with my hands. I couldn’t imagine doing anything else! After uni I worked in the film industry making sets and props for films and advertising. I worked on Disney’s Beauty and the Beast and The Favourite with Olivia Coleman among a lot of others, but after a good few years I found the long hours, commuting and intense deadlines exhausting. I moved back home to Suffolk to look for a change of direction and found Jim Lawrence.

What do you love most about your job?

I enjoy the calmness of having a routine, of being able to plan my day as I like and of the freedom I get working with the design team to experiment with new colours, finishes and products. I also love wet painting our old gold and old ivory products in particular, as it is a very ‘painterly’ process that involves building up layers of paint and hand touching the embossed details to make them stand out.

What is the most challenging product to work with?

Products with a slate grey finish and/or gloss white interiors are the is the most difficult to paint because they are a gloss finish which is really unforgiving and shows up any kind of mark. They are also incredibly static so draw any specks of dust to them. The paint room has to be spotless before we start painting, and no one is allowed in or out, or else you get dust or pieces of fluff stuck to them!

What is your favourite product?

It has to be the Sussex wall and pendant lights as they are such a beautiful pieces. They really are works of art. They are incredibly tactile, so are wonderful to handle and take the old gold finish so well. The black seeps into all the nooks and crannies so when you overpaint them with the gold it looks amazing, it really shows off the leaves and sheaves of wheat.

How do you enjoy being part of the Jim Lawrence family?

I love the fact that we’re a small company where everyone knows one another and are very approachable. We work hard but are calm and relaxed. People are always respectful of the skills you have and are open to ideas and, unlike the film industry, which was always chaotic, I enjoy having a routine and the freedom to get creative. My brother also works at Jim Lawrence. He’s in the machine shop so we’ll often have lunch together!

You can browse all of our hand forged and finished products on our website. Don’t forget to tag us in your own imagery on Instagram and Facebook – we love seeing our products in their new homes. To learn more about our painted finishes and what might best suit your home style, visit our product finish guide.
