Introducing Leoma from Style The Clutter

From a career in PR to floristry and now interior styling, Leoma has all the key ingredients for a successful Instagram – and that is exactly what Style The Clutter is. We found her account after Leoma tagged us in some beautiful shots of her updated boot room using our hooks, and are now avid followers of her delicious home updates.  An eclectic mix of old and new, Style The Clutter gives us a tour of Leoma’s home, influenced by traditional rustic French style and mixed with clean contemporary Scandinavian design.

Leoma, we want to ask what drew you to this house, but it is obviously a stunning space! What features in particular sealed the deal for you?

I was instantly drawn to the high ceilings and beautiful period features along with the well balanced layout. Moving a bit further outside of London meant we were getting more internal space and a bigger garden too, so that was a massive drawing point.

When did you decide to depart the floristry world and move into interiors?

It sort of just happened! While I was pregnant with my son I struggled to keep on top of the floristry, as is was very physically demanding, so I focused more on the house. I also started helping a few friends out with their projects and it all took off from there… Since then I have done further projects all through word of mouth and of course I can’t seem to stop tweaking my own home, which is something I absolutely love doing.

What encouraged you to document the renovation progress online?

I was quite housebound when my son was born as he suffered from allergies, so I just started taking pictures of our home and bits that I was working on at the time. I wish I had documented more form the beginning, but we had already lived in the house for 1 year before I started Instagramming so had already done a lot of work to it.

You describe your home style as traditional rustic with a scandi twist, where does this influence stem from?

I went through a more contemporary phase in our last property however I have always loved mixing old with new, our current home lends itself to this style beautifully. However thinking about this more in depth, I think the traditional rustic side stems from my upbringing. My mother is French and loves antiques, as did my great grandfather who was a collector. I remember being wowed by his barn full of grandfather clocks and beautiful armoires as a child and used to love exploring through all his treasures.

How do you tap into adding your own personality into a home?

I think this is something that has happened organically over time. Colour, accessorizing, textures and pattern play a major part and say a lot about personalities and individual style. As I have got older I am a lot more confident using quite daring tones, especially as a colour pop within a room for example, painting just the inside of a door bright pink, in fact I can get quite carried away…

We love the branch feature above your dining table – inspired! This must be influenced by your floral background?

My floral background definitely comes out over Christmas and that was how the branch came about, as Christmas trees in that specific room always tend to die very quickly, due to the underfloor heating. I decided to hang a branch over the table and decorate it for the season, however it has now become a permanent feature and been up for 8 months, I love tweaking it each season and for family celebrations.

Which has been your favourite room of the house to design?

The utility/laundry room was the most satisfying, originally a very annoying dead space as its very narrow and quite small. It took me a while to figure out what to do with it, I even considered taking out a wall! However through creating a wall to wall coat rack with a storage bench below and cabinets on the other side with lots of shelving, it has totally transformed the room and it now works so well. For storage and as a second entrance to the house.

Which has been the most challenging?

The room we now have as a play room was quite challenging as it was a through room with no windows except for a glass door going into another room. The chimney had been blocked up, so it really didn’t have much to it. So we decided to open up the chimney and put in a stove, we took out the doors this opened up the whole area into the orangery/kitchen which works really well giving a nice flow to the house. I then brightened it up with fun kids accessories and a pink sofa, its’s now such a nice airy room for the children to play that will turn into more of a snug area when they get older.

If you could go back and give advice to yourself before starting up the project, what would it be?

I wish I had lived in the house longer, instead of making rushed decisions before we moved in. It’s always a good way of getting a feel for the space, however I sometimes think if you don’t go for it, you never will. So it’s about finding a balance between the two and perhaps not rushing so much and having a little mull… I also think it’s good to go for things that you really like and that will last and be timeless rather than a trend or something you are not sure about.

Last but not least, what is next for ‘Style The Clutter’ in 2018?

What next… I have started to revamp rooms/homes all through word of mouth for clients, which is very exciting! I also might open a little online shop at some point focused on styling the clutter, but this is still very much in the pipeline as I Iove being a mummy too, so I’m trying to work out a balance.

How to discover your personal interior style

Our homes are so much more than a functional space to live in. As well as providing us with comfort, protection, and all the practical elements of day-to-day life, it should also be space that nurtures us, that we can relax in and be inspired by.

Ideally, our homes should also be a reflection of our personality; a place we can fill with the things we love, give us pleasure and make us happy. Whether you are renovating a new home or seeking to refresh a single room, understanding your personal style is key to a successful outcome. In this guide, we give you some top tips on how to learn what your own interiors style is and bring it to life in your home.

ARCHITECTURAL STYLE
  • Is your home modern, rustic, or a period property?
  • Does it have large rooms with high ceilings, or smaller rooms and low ceilings?
  • Which way does the room face? West, southwest and south facing rooms tend to have lots of light during the day and into the evenings. East, northeast and southeast facing rooms have more light in the mornings. North facing rooms may not get direct sunlight so tend to dark.
  • Are there natural features you would like to hide/make a feature of? Eg a fireplace or chimney breast, wooden beams, exposed walls, panelling, windows, alcoves.

REFLECT ON YOUR PREFERENCES

Think about your tastes, interests and lifestyle.

  • What colours do you naturally gravitate towards?
  • Are you drawn to a minimalist space with lean lines and no clutter or do you prefer a more rustic room with carefully curated keepsakes?
  • Or a bit of both – a mixy matchy eclectic approach?
  • Do you prefer cosy and intimate spaces or open and airy environments?

What activities do you engage in at home, and how can you manage your space support them, such as with storage or display areas?

GATHER INSPIRATION

Dive into the world of design inspiration.

  • Browse through magazines, websites and social media platforms.
  • Cut out or copy the ideas that appeal to you.
  • Create a digital or physical mood board featuring images, colors, textures, and patterns that resonate with you.
  • Pay attention to recurring themes and elements that capture your attention.
  • Play with your mood board to see how different colours, tones and texutures work together. Do they complement one another or contrast?

DEFINE YOUR STYLE

Based on your reflections and gathered inspiration, begin to define your interior style. What do your findings have in common? It could be a blend of different styles or a distinct theme that reflects your personality. Some popular interior design styles include:

Scandi: Clean lines, natural elements, folksy, minimalistic and functional.

Bohemian: Eclectic, vibrant and globally inspired.

Industrial: Raw materials, exposed elements and a warehouse vibe. Shop our industrial lighting edit here.

Mid-Century Modern: Retro-inspired with clean lines and organic shapes. Shop our mid-century inspired lighting here.

Coastal: Light and airy with a palette inspired by the ocean and beach.

Rustic: Think country cottage, cosy, intimate, natural elements, heritage pieces. Shop our country cottage style edit here.

EXPERIMENT AND EXPLORE

Don’t be afraid to experiment. Start small by incorporating new colours, textures, or decorative accents into your space.

  • Visit furniture stores, art galleries and home décor boutiques to explore diverse options.
  • Take note of what resonates with you and what doesn’t.
  • Start to refine your mood board to more specific colours, textures & themes that you’d like to explore.
  • Invest in tester paint pots and fabric swatches so you can build up an idea of what colourways work well together and which don’t.
  • Think about which colours you would like to work tonally for your overall colour scheme – for walls, floors, ceiling, carpeting, woodwork, curtains and upholstery.
  • Pick one or two colours that stand out against them to use as accent colours for curtains, scatter cushions, lampshades or perhaps a feature wall.
  • Visit our showrooms to pick up fabric swatches to take away and try and home…

TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS

Ultimately, your home should feel like a reflection of who you are. Trust your instincts and follow your intuition when making design decisions.

Surround yourself with pieces that bring you joy and comfort, rather than focusing solely on trends or what others may expect.

EMBRACE EVOLUTION

Remember that your interior style is not static and will evolve over time. Stay open to new influences and experiences and don’t be afraid to adapt and refine your aesthetic over time.

Boot Room Style For Spring | Spruce Up Your Storage Space

A boot room, a porch, a utility room. These practical spaces might be where you stash your walking shoes and hide your coats to keep the rest of the house tidy, but there’s no need to overlook this wonderful styling opportunity. For busy families, dog owners and anyone who enjoys the outdoor life, a well organised boot room is a must have space that will revolutionise your home. If you can keep your coats, shoes, wellies, dog leads, umbrellas, schoolbags and any other outdoorsy kit in one designated place, it will make a huge difference to the rest of your house.

If this area is cluttered it’s not actually serving its purpose. You want neat, space saving solutions to make the most out of a room that is designed to be a transitional storage space. Follow our simple tips to clear away clutter and add a few well chosen light, wall and door fittings and you can create a boot room to be proud of.

LIGHTING WITH UTILITY IN MIND

BROOKE WALL LIGHT

This is a sconce your home really can’t live without! The Brooke Wall Light is versatile in that you can decide with orientation works best in your room…fix up or down depending on your preference. The Brooke is paired here with our 20cm medium Pendant French Drum Shade in Soft Gold Cow Parsley cotton. Known for its versatility, cotton is one of the most commonly used fabrics for lamp shade as it is lightweight, durable and has a softness which is ideal for diffusing light evenly around a room. Our cow parsley has a relatively large weave that gives it a wonderful texture akin to linen. It is uniform appearance and brings a rustic and understated beauty for a laid-back look.

STANTON PENDANT LIGHT

An on-trend, versatile pendant light with a minimalist design that shows off the beauty of the bulb inside, our Stanton Pendant is a popular choice for kitchens, hallways, boot rooms and bedrooms. The Stanton Pendant’s slim and architectural lines are striking in a vatiety of finishes, but it’s the bold contrast of Matt Black which invites an industrial inspired silhouette into this space.

HARDWEARING METALWORK FOR A HERITAGE FEEL

You don’t need a lot of space, just some well thought out storage solutions to keep clutter at bay. If built-in cabinets are a non-starter, use a bench, chest, baskets or crates to store your kit and double up as somewhere to sit to pull off your wellies. Coat hooks are wonderful for keeping those essential coats, bags and leads handy but out of the way, while a mirror will make a small space seem larger. Those all essential wall and/or ceiling lights will create welcoming layers of light to illuminate your space all year round.

RAMSHOLT COAT HOOK

There’s always something to tuck away, so you can never have too many storage solutions like wall hooks. The Ramsholt Coat Hook is attractive traditionally forged double coat hook in a hammered matt black finish.

We make plenty of hooks in a selection of our beautiful finishes and ensure they are straightforward to fit on the wall or door for whichever purpose you need. Using our hooks in the nook of fitted cabinetry in a cloakroom for example is a thoughtful solution, leaving the floor space free to feel open, roomy and uncluttered with plenty of tucked away storage for any necessities.

THORNHILL MIRROR

A beautifully hand crafted and generously sized mirror that will give the illusion of further space in a smaller room. All our mirrors are hand forged and high quality – an everlasting home accessory to enhance any home.

INTERNAL LETTER PLATE

Banish draughts by using an internal letter plate on the inside of your door. A wonderfully weighty piece in forged iron to complete the look of your door furniture. Useful as they are, boot rooms can be draughty and cold, so it is worth incorporating some draught excluding solutions into your scheme.
Our beautiful internal letter plates are designed with a flap to keep out unwanted draughts and a heavy curtain in wool or tweed hung from a portiere rod or pole above the door is a brilliant way to keep out the cold whilst adding a heritage touch to your room.

FABRIC IN SOFT GOLD COW PARSLEY

When it came to choosing a colour palette for our new Cow Parsley Fabric, it was clear that plucking Jim and Sheena’s favourite views from their Suffolk farm would be translated into this new collection. An ode to the beautiful countryside we call home, Soft Gold is inspired by the glowing warmth of late September light, fire embers in December and the flourishing tones of daffodils come March. This collection conjures memories just like these: kicking off muddy boots at the doorstep and warming your hands on the radiator, admiring the first blooms of spring and the hum of wildlife in the trees. Our Cow Parsley collection neatly encapsulates all of these small seasonal joys into something you can admire all year round as part of your interior.

HUNSTANTON VELVET CUSHION COVER IN SAFFRON

One for the maximalists. Our new Saffron Velvet is a highly pigmented cadmium yellow that adds drama and vibrancy to your decor. Choose from three lampshade styles and beautifully plush cushion covers to match.

WATERFORD CUSHION COVER IN ELEPHANT LINEN

Our Waterford Linens are soft, tactile fabrics made up of a selection of gorgeous dusky tones that lend themselves beautifully to soft furnishings, whether curtains, shades or cushions. Linen is a beautifully soft yet tough natural fabric that is prized throughout the world for its versatility. Used everywhere from bedding to upholstery and lampshades, families would pass their linen to the next generation such is its durability and longevity.

2 GANG MODULAR GRID SWITCH

Give your room an instant update by accompanying your favourite Jim Lawrence products with our matching switches and sockets. When decorating a room it is sometimes easy to miss the little extras that can add the design flare your room was missing. A white plastic switch is a sight we are all over familiar with, but with us you can find a unique alternative and never have to forsake style for function.

This 2 gang black modular grid switch features a hand forged steel hammered plate, finished in matt black to complete the uniform look alongside your lighting and other accessories.

Industrial Style Lighting | Utility Meets Charm

Industrial design marries sleek modernity with old warehouse charm to create the perfect play of contrasts in your home. You don’t need to live in a loft space, converted factory or even in an urban environment to achieve an industrial look – you just need to follow a few basic principles and you can completely revitalise your space.

If you are looking for lighting ideas, we have industrial style lighting in vintage and contemporary styles as well as pendant and wall lights influenced by reclaimed pieces and agricultural finds from Jim and Sheena’s Suffolk farm.

We’re lucky enough to live in a country with a rich industrial history, whether it’s the mills, steelworks, warehouses or factories of our cities, or the agricultural landscape of the countryside. What better resource to influence your design choices or creative thinking?

Use your surroundings to inspire you. At Jim Lawrence we often go back to our farming roots to find ideas for our lighting and ironmongery. Our Bulkhead Outdoor Light was originally designed with Jim’s family farm in mind as he wanted to create a stylish and practical outdoor light for a converted cow shed. Similarly, our beautiful brass conduit kits were created to help Jim and Sheena tidy up exterior wiring on their barn. You can find out more about this clever accessory in our helpful conduit guide.

UNDERSTATED DESIGN

Industrial style lighting is all about practicality and versatility. Clean lines, simple forms and stark contrasts are a must, with an emphasis on natural materials and bare finishes. Made by us in our Suffolk workshop using traditional techniques, it’s no wonder our designs lend themselves beautifully to these more rustic hand finished colourways.

Our handsome, retro-look Aldgate Wall Light blends a classic lighting design with an industrial look to fit perfectly into the trend for stylish, vintage style lights for loft space living or kitchen lighting schemes. With its graceful swan neck arm and fully adjustable head that can be moved forwards and backwards, the Aldgate is the perfect combination of practical and stylish. Shown above in our contemporary Polished finish, this Aldgate is manufactured from solid high grade steel and polished to a deep, gunmetal grey.

To truly get the industrial look, find fixtures where the inner workings of the light are on show, such as a metal lamp holder, visible or oversized bulb and lots of braided cable. Originally, our cage-like Cowley Pendant was made to show off the beauty of a bare Squirrel Cage Bulb that was made for illuminating the sparse brick rooms of an old piggery on the farm. Refined by our design team to blend into a manner of interiors, you can now enjoy it in your home too.

MAKE THE MOST OF MINIMALISM

Make the most of your space by creating a clean, uncluttered interior that focuses on practicality and ensures your attention is drawn to your fixtures and fittings where you can make an impact with the bare essentials. Hanging pendants are perfect for introducing character and individuality into a scheme while keeping a sleek minimalist design. Choose ceiling lights with a simple outline and in block colours to create a bold statement and don’t be afraid to juxtapose modern designs with timeworn accessories for a great, layered lighting scheme.

@restore_home

MAKE A STATEMENT

As an alternative, naked bulbs paired with our Pendant Lampholders allow you to make a real ‘loft-inspired’ feature in the home. You can enhance the natural light whilst making a statement with unique or oversized bulbs. This beautiful kitchen belons to Sian from @restore_home_. Read our interview with Sian, exploring more of her vintage-look home which is framed with a cool industrial edge.

You can still get creative even when taking a minimal approach. We offer a variety of cut to order braided cable colours to mix and match with your metalwork and paint colours.

COMBINE FUNCTIONALITY WITH ELEGANCE

Our glass pendant lights will bring some sparkle to a space as well as show off the beauty of a heritage-style bulb, while our hand forged hardware will help you turn up the rusticity.

The Bellingham features a simple, cylindrical glass shade that is cleverly suspended from three brass arms, and a visible lamp holder for added dimension. Paired with our vintage-style chain and cable, these lovely pendant lights are made with kitchen island lighting in mind.

Clear glass shades bypass the visual imposition that can sometimes happen with weightier lighting and higher ceilings, allowing light to pass through whichever room you choose to place it. Pairing the beauty of these large hand blown domes with the blushing patina of our Heritage Copper is a sure way to marry elegance with a more rustic edge. Our Walcot Pendant in Heritage Copper is a popular choice for dining and living areas, inviting multiple levels of Great British Craftmanship into your decor.

FAVOUR METAL FEATURES

Handcrafted, metallic tones will complement natural building materials like wood, brick and plaster. Whether you want to dial up your rugged look or use something more refined, our collection of spun shades and hand forged accessories will do just the trick.

Wanting to create the perfect kitchen light using our Brass finish, we’ve taken one of our most popular pendants and given it a cleverly weighted pulley system so you can adjust its height to achieve the best light for tasking or entertaining. With its elegant silhouette and warm, on-trend antiqued brass tones, our Butler Rise and Fall Pendant Light is a classic kitchen pendant that will look fabulous hung above a kitchen table, island or breakfast bar. For a more pared back version, you will love the simple Butler Pendant Light.

OLD FASHIONED STYLING

Beautiful against this deep panelled backdrop, get the look with our Balmoral light in Antiqued Brass: combining the best of old fashioned styling with contemporary design to produce a pendant light that’s perfect for elevating a farmhouse kitchen. The Balmoral Pendants were designed with kitchen tables and breakfast bars in mind, with the shallow spun metal shade and vintage-look chain creating the perfect marriage of period style and industrial cool.

SLATE GREY FOR LOFT-STYLE LIVING

Our Heritage Copper and Antiqued Brass are classic industrial colours that will bring brightness and warmth to a scheme while our Polished Lacquer displays a beautiful steel patina and subtle pewter-like grey tone that is undeniably industrial in nature. For something unique that mirrors the feel of Brooklyn warehouse living, our Slate Grey finish is perfect for those of you after something a little different. Available in pendant hanging light designs and two of our most popular wall lights, this striking new colourway will instantly create a focal point in any contemporary or modern country kitchen or dining space.

With our Slate Grey Lexington Pendants gracing the modern country kitchen of designer Sarah Farrington, it’s clear this finish is not reserved for any one style. Experienced self builder, project manger and interior designer, Sarah of @farringtons_design is no stranger to a home renovation, and we love how our slate grey adds depth whilst invigorating her new build with character. We chat interior design, business and her plans for this incredible location here.

FACTORY INSPIRED WALL & SPOT LIGHTING

When it comes to colour schemes, designers often suggest sticking to a neutral palette in your home décor that is offset by fittings in moodier tones of black, grey and white. Our Matt Black, Slate Grey and Clay finishes are influenced by vintage factory lighting, offering smart uniform look to your lighting that works with any paint colourway.

The Pinewood Spotlight (above) has a mighty presence. Able to hold its own in a large space, the Pinewood is ideal for rooms with high ceilings. It can be fixed to a wall or ceiling, creating the perfect task lighting and is fully adjustable. The cog at the side of the light enables it to be angled up or down and fixed in place, while the whole light can be rotated fully to each side. For more suble choices, our more traditional spot lighting is wonderful for downlighting kitchens, hallways or supplementing your living areas with an another layer of industrial style lighting.

The Curtis Spot Light is an infallible choice. Traditionally styled and hand crafted, the Curtis combines the practicality of a spotlight with the beauty of our Club Wall Light with which it shares a similar spun shade. The Curtis is ideally suited as a down lighter for your kitchen, bedroom or living room. Its rustic finish and exposed braided cable gives it a retro feel which slips seamlessly into most interior styles.

This is our Fisher Wall Light, adding a subtle and gently diffused warmth to the interior of @warehouse_townhouse. Dark walls and brass are a no brainer when it comes to adding a quality lustre to your moody, industrial inspired interior.

Relaxed Coastal Style by Stylist Sally Denning

Many of us dream of living by the ocean, and if you haven’t, you will now. Even a quick flick through Relaxed Coastal Style by Stylist Sally Denning has us lusting after driftwood accessories, flowing linen curtains framing a sea view and worn wooden panelled shacks. After delving deeper into the beautiful homes that Sally explores in her book, it has us positively besotted with beachside living.

‘Country coastal’ is an interior style close to our hearts with the stretched out, pretty beaches of the Suffolk and Norfolk coasts a stones throw away. We love the laid back feel of the coastal homes that Sally explores, with the owners using locally sourced materials and beach-combed finds to kit out their rooms. These elements bring in on-trend style and an appreciative nod to the landscape around them…

A key motif throughout the book is the use of wood. Wooden beams, wooden panelling, rattan furniture, woven baskets and driftwood accessorised into homeware. Think brightly coloured beach huts to washed out window shutters. Even if you don’t live in an authentic wooden panelled house, there are many ways you can incorporate this look into your interior décor, such as faux-wood wallpaper, cleverly painted cupboard doors and preloved furniture. You can boost your external and internal vintage look by adding antiqued brass lighting and accessories like this modern rustic Isle of Sheppey beach hut.

Butler Pendant in Antiqued Brass, Barbican Pendant in Antiqued Brass, Edgeware Spotlight in Antiqued Brass

relaxed coastal style sally denning

Beige, stone and sandy tones come naturally to coastal homes. You might as well incorporate it into the design! There is so much fabric inspiration here, even where you least expect it. Linen curtains and upholstered chairs, textured rope and cream crochet. Even netting. These textures add layers and depth by taking inspiration from the external surroundings – a key step in coastal style. Why not try our range of soft linens as shades or cushions to bring in some texture rich natural tones?

Natural Isabelle Linen Candle Shade, Putty Killoween Linen Candle Shade, Cushion Covers in Linen

A coastal existence isn’t all sunshine and ice cream. Weather-beaten porch railings, rain and rust-stained tin rooves or fading paint and aged metal furniture make up a great deal of this book. Their existence is proof of their steadfast manufacturing, but evidence that living by the ocean can be tough and wearing. This is what we love about this book – the honesty. Sure, your interior can be as glamourous as you like, but it takes a certain kind of person to embrace an old property and make it their own in often remote and exposed locations. It requires great deal of hard work, but the character of such a place is an ongoing enjoyment for those who live there. To complete the look, add in other worn materials such as our Antiqued Brass or Polished light and handle fittings – a go to match for this faded look.

Erith Polished Cupboard Pulls, Pendant Lampholder in Matt Black with Braided Cable, Norfolk Drawer Pull in Polished

relaxed coastal style sally denning

We’ve cheated a bit here, because this is Sally’s own home (not featured in the book) which is too delicious to leave out. Decorating with the display items in a home can make or break a room. As is evident throughout the homes here, balance is the key. The Instagram hashtag #aquietstyle sums up the softness needed to pull off this look. It is immaculately considered, but executed in an understated manner. It is, in short, relaxed. Or rather it makes you feel relaxed. Using ancient bottles, hand-picked shells and wave-worn washed up glass might sound like clutter to some, but it’s these cherished finds that bring in personality and make a house into a home. For a shell you haven’t had to wash the salt out of, try our beautiful Scallop Wall Lights to bring a soft coastal vibe into your interior.

4 Ways to Achieve Coastal Cottage Styling This Summer

We have long been enamoured by coastal cottage style. It’s modern rustic at its finest, with a translatable look that can be worked into homes everywhere. Coastal cottage is an interior style close to our hearts, with the beautiful beaches of the Suffolk and Norfolk coasts a stones throw away from our HQ. We love the laid-back feel that comes with the shell motifs, earthy colour palettes, and natural texture. These elements are an appreciative nod to nautical landscapes, embodying an understated but nonetheless luxurious look.

Here are our four ways to achieve coastal cottage styling this summer…

LIGHTING

For a shell you don’t need to rinse the shingle out of, try our beautiful Scallop Wall Lights to bring a soft coastal vibe into your interior. Adding an instant update of coastal character, this light has been carefully designed to combine a decorative shade with a subdued backlight, perfect for creating mood lighting in a bedroom, study, cloakroom or open plan living space.

This eye-catching piece was inspired by Jim & Sheena’s holidays to the West Coast of Scotland, where fresh scallops were always on the menu and finding shells on the beach when the children were young was a favourite past time. Lovingly hand forged from solid natural brass that has been lightly antiqued for a subtly aged look, our Scallop has a wonderfully tactile quality that befits its handmade nature. Also available as a plug-in version.

Customers at the @narrow_house have curated a fresh yet cosy dwelling with our Curtis spotlight and other hints of time-worn Jim Lawrence brass, choosing some of our finest nautical-suited designs for their b&b in perfect proximity to the south west coastal path. The Curtis has a pretty spun shade, raised edge and visible braided cable that gives it a vintage feel that works perfectly for a more rustic coastal cottage look.

Embrace further seaside motifs in your bathroom with our Saunton Wall Lights. Choose from Antiqued Brass or Nickel for this shell-shaped Wall Light. These innovative wall lights have been cleverly designed with a sealed glass cover over the bulb to ensure they are waterproof and fully functional in a bathroom environment.

Coastal style interiors are typically light-filled and airy, making the most of natural light to create an open and spacious feel. Our glass wall and pendant lighting pair a clean silhouette with the natural reflectivness of glass that bounces light everywhere, creating statement pieces that won’t distrupt the sense of space.

HARDWARE DETAILS

Increase the light airy look of coastal living by enahncing the natural light at home. Our clay curtain poles and accessories will help to frame the windows with beautiful fabric (see colour ideas below), without creating the visual stop that darker hardware could provide.

Weather-beaten exteriors, aged metals and fading paint can sometimes be a part of coastal living. Their existence is proof of their steadfast manufacturing, but evidence that living by the ocean can be tough and wearing. Time worn materials have an undeniable charm, but you can achieve a similar aesthetic wherever you are with our Antiqued Brass or Polished fittings – a go to match for this gently aged look.

When decorating a room it is sometimes easy to miss the little extras that can add the design flare your room was missing. Smaller details like locks, hooks, and handles can make all the difference, helping you to create a considered, matching look throughout. If brass isn’t more you and you prefer a more traditionally rustic look, crank up the contrast with our black Suffolk Latches and Hinges.

TEXTURE

For a coastal look, there is inspiration all around. From linen curtains, to upholstered chairs, woven rope, and even netting. These textures add layers and depth by taking inspiration from the external surroundings – a key step in coastal style. Organic and robust, linens and jutes are practical but pretty additions to your coastal style decor.

An easy way to update our homes with these rustic and earthy tones is using cushions, throws and shades. We love the grain of linen and jute when lit up as a lampshade, highlighting the sought after textured weave whether in its natural oatmeal hues or dyed a soft colour to match your decor.

View all of our fabrics, available to buy as a cut length to get creative with, a ready made cushion cover or one of our luxury lampshades.

COLOUR

Beige, stone and sandy tones come naturally to coastal homes. You might as well incorporate it into the design! But let’s not overlook the obvious: blue hues. Whether paint, fabric, or accesories, hints of blue are a staple for cottage coastal decor. Blue can induce a feeling of tranquility at home, allowing for more play when it comes to pattern. Our new Indigo Watercolour fabric is perfect for refreshing a room with a touch of coastal charm. Painterly florals or gingham checks are a go-to for livening up a room, whilst softer hues that lean more towards grey are an option for those who prefer something more subtle.

Darker jewel tones in rich blues might be colder in tone, but never fail to make a room feel like home. The colours of our Hunstanton Velvet Collection were influenced by the sea and skyscapes of north Norfolk. Wanting this range to evoke the dramatic sunsets and vast, stretched out sands of Hunstanton and the surrounding coastline, we had to include a deep, dusky Navy.

A blend of natural sandy linen and bold indigo,  our Indigo Cottage Stripe fabric will dress up any space with a subtle take on beachy stripes; perfect for plumping with a gorgeous feather pad inside.

For added interest, try using ancient bottles, hand-picked shells and wave-worn washed up glass might sound like clutter to some, but it’s these cherished finds that bring in personality and make a house into a home. Explore more coastal style ideas on our helpful inspiration page.

Beautiful Homes

Beautiful Homes | Introducing @nestandcovintage

Co-founder and stylist of Surrey-based Heritage Park Interiors, Linda Park of @nestandcovintage is also renovating their own 18th century home room by room. Characterised by muted tones and inviting hints of Jim Lawrence brass, this home is one to watch.

Please tell us about your beautiful home. What drew you to this property, and when did you move in?

We moved in at the beginning of 2022 after our search to find a house with the potential to renovate and create a home for our family. I was drawn to the original features and the architectural design of the house which was built in 1890. The house is surrounded by trees and has a large garden for my boys to enjoy and where we love to entertain friends and family in the warmer months.

Heritage Park Interiors was founded last year by yourself and designer Karen Heritage, offering design services and even sourcing vintage pieces for the home. How did you come to start the business?

We meet through selling antique and vintage homewares and immediately bonded over our shared interest of interiors. I had a large client base both here and in the US and Karen had an established design studio, so we wanted to combine our experience and expertise to create interiors with a timeless appeal using antique and vintage pieces. We have lots in common, yet bring different strengths to the business so we work well as a team sharing creative ideas with clients on how to incorporate antiques and vintage pieces in a space. We love to source time-worn pieces with a story, and you will often find us at antique markets and fairs around the country hunting for beautiful furniture, homewares and artwork that will add character and charm to interiors.

Your own home features carefully considered treasures throughout, where do you source these unique and reclaimed items?

Many of the pieces in my home are one-of-a-kind items sourced during my many trips to antique and vintage fairs and brocantes. Over the years I have established close relationships with traders and have direct sources for many of the pieces. I have also found antique and vintage treasures online, at charity shops and car boot sales, as well as during travels to Slovakia where I am originally from.

Why is sourcing vintage important to you?

I love how unique the pieces are and how it creates a bespoke look in a room scheme with lots of charm and character. Vintage pieces have a story to tell and were often crafted using techniques that make them harder wearing and longer lasting than their modern counterparts. Sustainability is ingrained in my approach and our business practices at Heritage Park Interiors so it’s important to reuse and repurpose what already exists to reduce landfill waste and minimise our environmental impact for future generations. An heirloom piece of furniture doesn’t have to cost a fortune.

We love seeing our lighting thoughtfully placed amongst your antique finds. How important is it to balance the old and new?

So important! Antique and vintage pieces have a history that brings a sense of nostalgia and ground a room, but there are certain antique items such as lighting where it can be difficult to find matching pairs. This is where I find the Jim Lawrence range works perfectly alongside older finds. The Jim Lawrence lights have a timeless design and high-quality finish which blends so well with antique pieces.

When first designing a room (for a client or yourself), how big a role does the lighting play?

Lighting is one of the key components of interior design. At Heritage Park Interiors we always specify different forms of lighting in a design scheme including table lamps, floor lamps, pendants, and wall lights to give definition to a space and create ambience. Distributing light around a room makes it feel larger and creates zones for different activities. Lampshades add texture and softness to a room, so we often add them in kitchens to counteract the harder surfaces.

Each of your rooms are layered with natural, rustic, textures with sparing use of colour, save for natural greens. What is the benefit of bringing the outside in?

I always have a bunch of fresh flowers in my main living areas and enjoy displaying large branches in vintage pots around my house. I find it so relaxing and calming to bring nature indoors. Our designs at Heritage Park Interiors take into consideration the principles of biophilia and the connection between nature and wellbeing. Being indoors so much, we can all benefit from being closer to nature whether it’s a view from a window or a simple floral display in our homes.

Do you have any advice for others who wish to implement a simpler, more thoughtful approach to decorating their own homes?

Creating a home takes time, so try not to rush it and enjoy the process as much as you can. Start by decluttering and looking around to see what pieces you love and need in your home; less is often more! Move furniture and artwork around your home, what doesn’t work in one room might be perfect in another space. I always create a neutral palette as a backdrop and layer with furnishings and textures to create cosy, timeless spaces.

What are your plans for Heritage Park ?

As a newly established company, we have big plans! Foremost to exceed the needs of our clients and share our passion for sustainable, timeless interiors with others. We would love to collaborate with like-minded companies and champion antique and vintage interiors along with designing our own product range with longevity and quality at the forefront.

A few quick-fire questions…

What’s the staple homeware piece that everyone needs?

It is so hard to choose just one, but I would have to say linen fabric. I use it throughout my home as it is hard wearing, sustainable and adds a natural texture to a room.

Which is your favourite room of the house?

My hallway as I love the spacious entry and character of the front door and leadlight windows. It is the first impression people get when welcoming them into my home and is an indication of my relaxed, timeless style.

Your favourite Jim Lawrence product?

The Brooke wall lights in antique brass, they are a timeless design and instantly elevate a room. I love the simplicity of these lights while still making a statement. The neutral shade adds texture and works perfectly in my home paired with the artwork and decor.

Spotlight On | NEW Plug-in Wall Lights

Because we know you love them, we’ve designed and manufactured three new additions to our popular Plug-in Lighting collection.

Recognising the demand for instant, easy lighting that can be used anywhere in the home, we’ve created differing orientations for the classic Carrick and Brooke Plug-ins, as well as a brand-new take on the industrial-inspired, more contemporary Thorpe wall light. These lights feature some of our bestselling shade designs fitted with a plug and in-line switch so you can achieve the Jim Lawrence look straight from the box without the worry of internal wiring.

THE THORPE

A minimal, modern wall light, the Thorpe is a neat wall fitting that is striking paired with a vintage bulb, or subtle when neatly framed by one of our half shades for a contemporary look. Available in Matt Black or Polished.

THE CARRICK (UP)

Similar to our Club Wall Light but adapted to hold a fabric shade, our Carrick Plug-in Wall Light will cast soft layers of light wherever you need it. Available in Antiqued Brass, and paired above with a Natural Isabelle Linen 15cm Empire Shade.

THE BROOKE (DOWN)

The Brooke makes a great alternative to traditional bedroom lighting, leaving space to de-clutter any surfaces where your bedside essentials reside. Available in Antiqued Brass. Shown here with a 20cm Pendant French Drum Shade in our Natural Isabelle Linen.

Finding Comfort in Laid-back Luxury

The season where we seek comfort and embrace warmth in our homes is here. Choosing high-quality materials to enhance the space we live in feels more important than ever as we maximise the places we call home with items that transcend trends and answer the call for longevity and sustainability. In the name of quiet, laid-back luxury, we’ve curated a cosy autumnal look with a handful of long-standing Jim Lawrence classics that embody our ethos for great British craftmanship and timeless design.

A blend of rustic favourites and new, refined contemporary designs, creates a relaxed, lived-in look perfect for a transitional season. Layered lighting, rich satins and brass accents harnesses the power of warm tones and textures whilst prioritising a clean look that doesn’t feel cluttered.

“Autumn is a time to hunker down and feel cosy,” says Jim Lawrence co-founder and Director Sheena Lawrence. “Dialling up the ambience with different light sources is key for this calm feeling, and we felt that a colour palette of olive greens and warmer russets creates a modern, rustic look that is sympathetic to the season.”

LAYERED LIGHTING

Layering a space with pools of light from different sources ensures the area radiates comfort and calm. Balancing the traditional and contemporary in a modern rustic interior is important for creating a sphere of cosiness when the autumnal nights draw in.

Classic wall lights offer a gentler illumination than bold, directional contemporary lighting. Think of these wall lights as supplementary, helping to create additional layers of light in alcoves, nooks and to frame areas like fireplaces and seating areas with soft pools of light. They can also exist to serve a statement. Our Sussex Wall Light has been a Jim Lawrence staple for years. We were inspired by the floral motifs of Regency décor which we have tweaked to produce a more pared down, modern version for your walls. It has been fashioned from forged iron and hand painted in our subtle Old Gold finish for a luxurious look that makes it perfect for creating a feature in a period room or bringing a vintage look to a modern setting.

A central pendant can create a statement in a room where scale is carefully considered. No matter the size, however,  glass pendants reflect the light, bouncing the brightness back into the room rather than providing a visual stop. With this in mind, we chose to feature the latest addition to the Jim Lawrence collection: the Fluted Walcot Pendant. This new design features a fluted adaptation of its original shape; the sweetly scalloped edge bringing an ornamental look to this well-loved light.

ENHANCING THE HOME

No coffee table is complete without a Samworth Oil Lamp. At a time to think about hunkering down and nesting, the Samworth is a go-to accessory for an autumnal and winter interior. For us, the Samworth is synonymous with the autumnal and winter months, bringing with it an old timey charm and the prettiest flickering flame. Light one of our natural beeswax candles in our Penfold Hurricane Lamp to enjoy more enchanting candlelight on these longer evenings.

THE GREAT OUTDOORS

There’s nothing quite like returning home at dusk to be greeted by a warm glow pouring from the windows. Further illuminating the house and garden with a Jim Lawrence outdoor light is a sure way to make this welcome home even warmer. Dainty lights like our Clipper and Harbour Wall Lights are perfect for bringing a nautical-inspired, vintage touch to porches, pathways and outbuildings.
