5 Kitchen Spotlights That Will Brighten Up Your Home

A well-placed spotlight will provide directional lighting wherever you need it. Choose a single spot to light up a specific area, or one of our combinations of up to six spots for a whole room. Our fabulous range of kitchen spotlights contains industrial-inspired designs for a contemporary interior and antiqued versions for a more traditional look.

Spotlights can be used anywhere in your home, but they make the best kitchen lights as they provide bright, focused light for those all-important tasking jobs you undertake in a kitchen. Our range of kitchen lights includes spotlights, LED spotlights, ceiling-mounted spots and dimmable spotlights, all made with directional heads that can be angled where you need them to create the perfect ambiance. Angled lighting is often favoured by interior designers to highlight specific areas or objects in a room. By directing a focused beam of light, you can create a dramatic effect that draws attention to a particular feature or creates a unique ambiance. We’ll be highlighting five different types of spot lighting and how to use them to create a stunning focal point in any room.

THE SINGLE CURTIS

Shown in a room designed by Francesca Rowan Plowden for Elmley Nature Reserve, this is a wonderful placement for our bestselling Single Curtis Spot Light. With a slim head that can be angled through 90 degrees and rotated through 350 degrees and a nod to retro design, the Single Curtis Spot Light is scaled to work in smaller spaces just like this one to access hard to reach areas or place on narrow beams. Photographed by @rebeccadouglasphotography.

THE SALTHOUSE

We adore the use of our dainty Salthouse Wall Lights here by @storries.scottish.steadings with a trio of Exeter Pendants above the dining area, bringing in hints of warm brass against an effective pairing of stone grey and off-white keeping things cool. Our take on industrial lighting from the 50s and 60s, the Salthouse adds a unique twist whilst brightening the darker nooks of your kitchens.

THE EDGEWARE

Lizzy of @pink.walls.at.number.13 has conjured elements of farmhouse living in the kitchen of her beautiful victorian reno: a style which our lighting is particularly at home in. Our Edgeware Spot Light is a nifty addition, with a rounded shade offering a softer looking alternative to the similarly proportioned Curtis light.

THE EDGEWARE FLUSH

The Edgeware Flush Mount Ceiling Light is a traditionally styled, handcrafted, fixed ceiling light that combines the practicality of a spotlight with the beauty of our Edgeware spun brass shade. It is ideally suited as a downlighter for your kitchen worktops or island, as beautifully presented by @ns.interiordesign alongside a trio of Thornton Pendants. Pairing spot lights with pendants develops layers in the room: a necessary overlap for a multifunctional space.

THE ALDGATE

Our Aldgate Wall Light is an industrial inspired design that makes a bold statement in contemporary home after a retro look. It has an adjustable head, so can light as much or as little of the area as needed. Illuminate shelving, artwork or kitchen surfaces with this bright and bold design.

MULTIPLE SPOTLIGHTS

Bar spotlights lend themselves to kitchens with high or vaulted ceilings. They are also popular as living room lights, used for bedroom lighting and to provide directional lighting in garages, home offices and hallways. Discover our double and multiple kitchen spotlights here.

Spotlight On | Sara & Dan of The CONTENTed Nest

Stylist, art director and author, Sara Bird is highly skilled in the world of interiors with a keen emphasis on sustainability. A flair for storytelling woven through her work, Sara has styled many beautiful photoshoots for all your favourite home magazines. Teamed with award-winning interiors photographer Dan Duchar, they make up two halves of The CONTENTed Nest. We caught up with Sara and Dan to find out how two professionals approach the styling of a real home, and how best to embrace the ethos of thoughtful decorating.

Sara and Dan, welcome to the Style Journal. Can you tell us a bit about how you both got into the world of interiors?

S: I was always interested in interiors, even as a child, and went on to study architecture at University. It was always the designers who thought about the whole home and not just walls who I was drawn to. William Morris and the Arts & Crafts were a massive influence on me, not just for their artisan and authentic approach, but their designs were very much about how they would be used on a human level. During my early career I managed to secure work experience at Homes & Gardens, and then a position in the press and marketing team at Sanderson and Morris & Co, which meant I was introduced to the world of styling and interior shoots.

D: I started out as a food photographer, and I’d gone into a magazine to show my portfolio. They really liked my lighting and asked if I would be interested in applying that style to interiors. They made it very clear it was a different discipline. I changed direction, did tests, and put together a new portfolio and went from there. I loved it.

Where did the concept for The CONTENTed Nest come from and how long have you been working together?

S: We’ve been working together for over six years now creating photographic stories and campaigns for makers and brands. We realised pretty early on we had the same vision for crafting images, but for us it is also the behind-the-scenes narrative and detail which we love to incorporate whether it is the about a setting, a skill, a style or vision. Sharing what makes a person or company ’tick’ through an image is very rewarding and we’ve got to know many amazing creatives along the way.

You touch on the concept of ‘slower styling’ in your book Home For The Soul, what does it mean to curate a more mindful living space?

S: Interiors will always have trends and new looks, but curating a home is very different to repeat redecoration. Living somewhere gives us the chance to gradually create our own style, make it unique and bespoke to how we live and how we feel when we are at home. Slower styling allows us the time to curate this look, to blend what we inherit with gradually gathered finds and new buys, so everything sits comfortably together in our own individual style.

In the past few years there has been a real shift in attitudes towards more sustainable practice like this. How can we all implement these positive and conscious changes in the everyday home?

D: I’ve always adopted things early both with new technology and practises but as with most things it’s so easy to cast off old things without a thought. Far better to invest in something over time.

S: It is true about small changes making the biggest difference. Switching to refills and reusables, recycling, and revamping, learning to re-love rather than remove, or if one is buying then purchase for longevity. For myself I’ve really started to think about how best I can re-use something.

When you are styling a beautiful scene for a magazine or brand there is a particular shot in mind. In the age of Instagram many people are viewing their own homes in this way too. How can you apply careful curation to an area of the home without it looking too staged?

S: The trick with styling, particularly home styling, is that it has to feel like someone could live or be there, like someone has just left the scene. There will always be a place for certain formal styling but for the home it’s the imperfections which make the shot.

Lighting is everything. Do you have a formula you stick to when it comes to illuminating a space?

D: I’m a firm believer in not forcing light into a room. If you’ve not got a light bright airy home, go with a darker moodier colour to create a far more atmospheric and interesting home. For shoots, I always light things to make them feel as natural as possible.

S: Lighting a room has many subtleties and layers to getting it right. I always consider how a room might be used, what atmosphere I want to create and how flexible the lighting needs to be. Ambient lighting works best if it is dimmable. I like to use task lighting and decorative lighting to create zones in a room. Accent lighting needs to be really considered and used in measured manner to illuminate just the right amount of distinctive decorative elements or spaces.

The latest edition to your book series Retreats For The Soul came out this year, why do you think it’s so important that we explore spaces other than our own homes? Can we make our own homes feel like a luxury retreat?

S: For me it is more about having the luxury of a retreat rather than a luxury retreat. Busy lives, extreme stresses, everyday worries can build and manifest and to be able to leave these to one side for a moment is a great comfort. Having this escape place, or retreat, is a simple way to find your own place to just ‘be’ in your own terms and fill the time doing whatever you want to do, even if it’s nothing!

Your lovely books are bursting with inspiration for your readers, but do you have a personal go-to source for when you need to ignite that creative spark?

S: The books have been a pleasure to work on with Dan. As content creators we have a shared interest in looking around and behind the scenes of historical properties or places of special interest advocating artisan making methods and traditional techniques. These aspects of the work are what inspires me the most.

D: We often seek inspiration from history – I love the National Trust and visiting their properties for ideas.

Finally, a few quickfire questions…

What is your top tip for making a house a home?

D: Take your time to decorate.

S: And don’t worry about what anyone else thinks about your decisions. It is your place to style it to create your happy place.

What has been your favourite project to date?

S: I’m enormously proud of the books and meeting the people behind the homes, gardens, and retreats. Work wise and shoots in general, I think my favourite part is always working with the people behind the brand and designs. Understanding what makes them tick and how they feel about something they have created just lights up a project and packs it with meaning. I’m a softie for a good old story, be that how something came about or how it was made.

We must ask…what’s your favourite Jim Lawrence product?

S: Can I stretch this to products!! I’m obsessed with your door furniture, the locks in particular which I think must come from the crossover to my architectural study days. They are beautiful but oh so functional and designed to be touched and used. If I had to drill down to just one item, it would be the rim lock with the mews handle. It’s stunning.

What are you most excited for in 2023?

S: 2023 so far has seen us launch our new book Retreats for the Soul, which has been very exciting. It’s published worldwide and hearing such lovely feedback from home and abroad has been humbling and really satisfying.  We also have shoots in the pipeline with favourite brands of old and new partnerships in the making and to work with these design teams always is a highlight.

A Restorative Space | Choosing Laid Back Luxury

This season we all tend to think of the great outdoors, but for summer this year we plan to treat the inside of our homes as the ultimate restorative space. Creating a harmonious atmosphere with a balance of colour and clever lighting will pave the way for a relaxing interior that feels like your very own luxury getaway.

“We are all so busy that it’s difficult to find time to unwind and yet it’s essential for our wellbeing – even if you only have five minutes to spare,” says Jim Lawrence co-founder Sheena Lawrence. “We wanted to create an escape that anyone can make at home. You don’t need a lot of space, just room for a comfy armchair and a handy side table. Add plump cushions and restful lighting and you’ll want to remain there all day.”

One of our favourite ways to bring luxury hotel style into the home is to construct pockets of space that are reserved for winding down, just like this laid-back reading nook. Dress these areas with carefully considered wall, floor, and table lighting to illuminate the area accordingly.

LIGHTING

The Cottage Wall Light was one of the first lights we ever made at Jim Lawrence and continues to be one of our most popular designs today. Available in seven different unique-to-us finishes in both single and double designs, the cottage is an excellent choice for anyone wishing to update their interior without losing any sense of period charm. To invigorate this rustic design with some seasonal interest we have featured our new Candle Shades in Raspberry Spring Leaf.

Layering your lighting with table lamps is essential for adding depth and modifying the energy around you.. Bringing in pools of light from different sources like table lamps is the key to a balanced atmosphere whilst giving you the option to dial up the cosiness alongisde your wall lighting if you choose. Our Hendon Table Lamp is dainty in size with elegant proportions; perfect for highlighting our new 20cm Medium French Drum Shade in Natural Jute with Tassels.

Floor Lamps are a must-have for those seeking a solution to darker corners that need a stylish lift in a living space. Not only do they provide additional lighting, but they can also serve as a statement piece in your home decor. Charmingly hand forged from solid steel, the Nayland Adjustable Reading Lamp features a curved shade arm and tripod stand that can be adjusted in height making it a good choice as a reading light in a bedroom, study or living room setting like this. Complement the striking silhouette with a bold shade colour like our new Hunstanton Raspberry Velvet.

HOME FURNISHINGS

After a busy day, there is no better feeling than to come inside, kick off your shoes, put your feet up and enjoy a moment of peace and quiet. We wanted to embrace this feeling, capturing a luxurious space that invites you to take a moment for yourself. In an area where you might want to read a book, catch up on your favourite interior magazines or enjoy a sip of your favourite tipple, a side table is essential for fascilliating other accessories that will make the room feel complete.

This is our elegant Hampton Table in classic Matt Black. Perfectly suited to hallways and living areas, the Hampton is waiting to be dressed with your favourite flowers, a scented candle or perhaps one of our smaller table lamps to brighten up a corner of your home.

BRAND NEW FABRICS

Inspired by Pantone’s colour of the year and influenced by the tones that adorn our British cottage gardens in the summer months, we’ve also introduced four brand new fabrics that weave vibrant hues with organic tones and textures.

Adding a decorative cushion or two is a quick and easy way to invigorate your bedroom or living room with colour and texture. We love the bright, raspberry hue of our latest Hunstanton velvet that instantly lends a sense of luxury to a setting, combined with the softer pink of our Spring Leaf cotton and dusky tones of the Cottage Stripe in Coral.

Contrast these with our wonderful Natural Jute lampshades and you have an inviting corner that it is a pleasure to rest in.

Beautiful Homes | Introducing SJ Axelby

If you’re an interior design lover, then SJ Axelby won’t need too much of an introduction. Her delectable watercolours of period homes ooze charm and style, featuring the cosiest corners of renowned interior designers. A painter with an antique restoration heritage; SJ has art in her bones. As someone who captures the delight of other people’s properties for a living, we wanted to delve a little further into her own rooms that she calls home.

Welcome to the Style Journal, SJ! Before we get into your own interior, could you give us a rundown of your background as a painter? Where did it all begin?

From an early age my Grandfather and mother actively encouraged my art as they too loved to paint and ran the family antique restoration business together. I’ve been watercolour painting since I was a child and can’t remember a moment in my life when I haven’t had some sort of creative project on the go. I have a degree in textile design but can also turn my hand to ceramics, print making and anything practical. I have a roll my sleeves up kind of attitude to most things.  I now love exploring mixed media in combination with watercolour, the effects are truly wonderful.

You come from a long lineage of creatives, including Henry Corbould who designed the Penny Black and his son Edward Henry taught watercolour to Queen Victoria’s children. That’s quite a legacy. How has this knowledge impacted your life as an artist?

Every now and again I wish my Grandfather could see what I’m up to now, I know he would be chuffed to bits. As for my ancestors I am in awe of their work and achievements, it must have been quite an honour to work for the royal household. I love to visit EH Corbould’s work at the V and A Museum in London and I would love to see some of the palace’s private collection of his work, that would be a dream.

Your training in textile design emerges in your work in that the images feel tactile and alive, as though you could turn a handle and step into the page. Tell us how you layer a room with colour and texture to make it sing in real time.

In my work that’s entirely what I try to do. I want the viewer to feel the room as well as see it. Just like a painting filling a room with things is a process, layer upon layer until it feels right. A friend always said to me once you think it’s right…take one thing away. It seems to work every time. I couldn’t live without textiles and textures in my home, from the vintage madeleine tins I glue gunned onto metal beams to the tartan wool blankets that are thrown over the back of each kitchen chair.

Many of your paintings feature a rich tapestry of pattern and antique style. How important are vintage treasures in your home?

It’s hard for me to buy something new, it’s in my blood to find old antique and vintage finds. One man’s treasure and all that…

When you were designing your own decor, was it hard not to view each corner as a vignette of sorts? Or did that help you construct the space?

I do have to tell myself to stop. My husband is a minimalist and over time he has mellowed to my bits and bobs. He will chuckle when I come home with a new find. I sometimes start with a painting or a fabric or wallpaper I know I want to use in a space and then work everything around it. Although I don’t like things to be too matchy matchy.

Do you have a favourite room of the house?

Right now, it’s the kitchen, we are lucky to have views over the garden and fields beyond and springtime is such a joyful time of year with all the daffodils out. We recently changed the décor in here from quite a neutral palette to a softer warmer scheme of butter and red. It works really well with all the brass fittings.

Styling paintings we love in the home can be tricky. Do you have any tips for our audience who are keen to introduce artwork into their decor but aren’t sure where to start?

Frames are everything, my go to is @aprinart, he made me a special range of zigzag frames for an exhibition last year and I have these dotted about the house. I try to make my work easy to fit standard frame sizes to keep the costs down so most of my work will fit straight into an A4 nicely without the need for a mount. I would always just buy what makes your heart sing, after all its you that’s going to be looking at it most of the time.

We were thrilled to spot the Single and Double Howard Wall Lights in your kitchen and dining areas. What drew you to these designs?

Oh, golly these were perfect for the kitchen. I’d been looking for ages for something brass that would work with the DeVol kitchen, and these ticked every box for me. I don’t like fuss and this classic design is timeless.

Finally, a few quickfire questions…

What is your top tip for making a house a home?

Fill it with the people you love, a dog and lots of blankets (one can never have too many).

Can you describe your personal style in three words?

Homely, jolly, and eclectic.

We must ask…what’s your favourite Jim Lawrence product?

Ooh where to start, my lights are fabulous, but I really love all the other details too. I have used brass dolly switches and sockets and the floor sockets too which are perfect for hooking up a laptop and for the Christmas tree in the kitchen.

What are you most looking forward to in 2023?

I have so many lovely projects on which I’m hugely grateful for, a new book coming out in the Autumn and lots and lots of travel plans from Egypt to India and some interrailing too!

Plug Sockets For Every Room Of The House

Plug sockets may seem like a small detail, but they play an instrumental role in the functionality of our daily lives. From charging our phones to powering our appliances, plug sockets are essential in every home. With our renowned attention to detail, we craft and hand finish a variety of styles to suit each room of the house. From bathroom shaver sockets, dual USB options for bedrooms and floor sockets for living areas, we have something for every style.

KITCHEN PLUG SOCKETS

When considering socekts for a kitchen, think about the electrical items that you regularly use on a worktop level, as well as the more heavy duty items where you might need something like a cooker switch to separate the heavy load of appliances. Our most popular 13amp Plug Sockets are available in a number of finishes to match your lighting scheme. Perfect for plugging in your kettles, toasters and the like, these sockets have a simply elegant look; bringing the flair that a plain plastic socket is missing.

For your Cooker Socket, our 45amp designs feature neon on/off indicators for safety and maintenance purposes. Choose from double or single options to best suit your space.

BEDROOM PLUG SOCKETS

A lack of plug sockets can be frustrating in a bedroom, particiularly now many of us use mutiple gadgets that need to be charged up. Though we think the bedroom should be a source of calm and a space to wind down in, it’s true that overnight charging is a practicality and we often like to have our phones to hand (or at least in sight!) A traditional double socket by the bed side might suit some, but these are often reserved for cosy table lamp lighting. To avoid a tangle of cables in your sleeping area, we recommend other charging points in the room that have handy dual USB ports for your convenience. Perfect for charging phones, cameras and all your electrical devices.

LIVING ROOM PLUG SOCKETS

We have found that making a feature out of the quirks of period homes is often the best way to enjoy them. A hinged design that fits into the floor, this 2 Gang Floor Socket is the dreamy modern rustic detail you might not have thought of, but now know you need. A great solution when you don’t want wires stretching around the room or have limited wall space, you can enjoy floor or table lamps in more central spots around the room, or use them for other portable accessories.

When considering your home’s electrical scheme, it is easy to get lost in the myriad of socket types that are available, so we always recommend speaking to a qualified electrician about your requirements first. We can create a bespoke media socket comprised of HDMI or audio outlets, TV modules and USB ports. Learn more about cosntructing your own bespoke Media Socket here.

BATHROOM PLUG SOCKETS

Bathroom sockets might seem like an afterthought when you’re dreaming up your ideal bathroom décor. Wall colour and lighting may oftencome first , but our Shaving Sockets are a practical and pretty solution to make sure every element of your bathroom is beautifully presented throughout. Our beautifully handcrafted, dual supply 240/115V Shaver Socket comes in four finishes with the option of a bevelled or hammered backplate to match your switches and light fixtures as desired.

A wonderful solution for transforming unsightly external wiring into a stunning feature, this smart 20mm universal conduit system enables you to connect your chosen wall and pendant lights, plug sockets and switches along a wall or ceiling while hiding unsightly wiring. The system is ideal for introducing heritage, industrial style to a property or where solid walls prevent you from hiding electrics in a cavity.

The brass tubing carefully conceals and shelters your cables, protecting them from moisture and offering long durable protection without forsaking style for function. Hand finished in our popular Antiqued Brass; this kit opens the floor for greater personalisation for your lighting scheme at home.

CONDUIT ROSE

Our new conduit ceiling rose is designed to fit a selection of bulbs in standard and vintage styles. Fit on the ceiling for a striking pendant orientation or against the wall for a traditionally industrial look. For those of you who wish to pair your conduit kit with our wall lighting designs instead of a naked bulb, you can purchase the Four Way Junction Box to fit a number of existing Jim Lawrence wall light designs.

MOUNTING BOX

The new mounting boxes allow for the addition of switches and sockets to your conduit, helping you to configure a perfect lighting scheme no matter the setting. Please note, the socket and switches are suitable for indoor conduit use only.

JUNCTION BOX

Choose from a Four Way Junction Box or T Junction Box to route your cables across your walls and ceiling exactly where you need them.

INDOOR STYLING INSPIRATION

Choose from 6 of our bestselling wall light designs to fit with your Four Way Junction Box. The Brooke, Dulwich, Scallop, Shotley, Eleigh and Barbican Wall Lights share the same backplate which can easily be fitted to the Junction Box to complete the look. For hard to reach areas like beams or higher ceilings that need more focused and directional lighting, try pairing our Single Curtis or Single Edgeware spot lights with the universal conduit system.

OUTDOOR IDEAS

A lot of brands (ourselves included) tend to put a lot of focus on the interior of a home. This is because it’s where we spend most of our time (inside, looking out) but what about when we’re on the outside looking in, realising the exterior is looking a little tired? This is where a conduit comes in. Pair our bestselling Bulkhead or Doncaster Wall Light with our Universal Conduit System to refresh your outdoor lighting scheme.

IP RATING

Our Conduits are IP rated 44 for use in bathrooms and outdoors if used with compatible lighting.  The conduit system works via a series of push fit couplers to join the tube between junction boxes. The couplers have an internal O-Ring that presses against the tube creating an IP seal making them safe for damp settings. Learn more about IP ratings in our Knowledge Base.

FIT THE KIT

We always recommend you can a qualified electrician on hand to advise you, but here’s a breakdown of how our universal conduit system is assembled in our helpful guide.
